i use yesterdays news litter but its quite hardso i put some soft bedding over top of it so it wont hurt my rabbits feet, and i change it and wash the litter box every 3 days or whenever i notice lots of poo and stuff. im moving my bunny inside and i dont want the litter to smell at all so would it be okay to sprinkle some baking soda in the litter box or would that be harmful to my bunny? is there anything i can do to help prevent it from smelling besides changing it every day ?

Baking soda could hurt the bunny if it ingests any, so I wouldn’t do that.

I live in a studio apartment and have two bunnies. I change the litters about twice a week and I really don’t notice a smell. When I walk into my apartment I smell hay, not dirty litter. I use a combination of generic yesterdays news and pine pellets. I don’t think the smell should be that noticable for you if you change the litter every three days but you might want to consider pine pellets, as long as you like the smell of pine. I’ve found them to be the best at masking any odors. And they are cheap! (I use the combination of paper litter and pine because the smell of just pine pellets was too much for me.)

Also, I think I remember reading that the urine of unfixed rabbits smells more than that of fixed rabbits. Not sure if your little guy is fixed or not.

No ~ I don’t think baking soda is a good idea. Maybe put it in a bowl somewhere where your bunny can’t reach to absorb the smell.

I don’t think you can really avoid not cleaning it everyday. I scoop out the poop and heavily urinated spots in my bunnies litter every evening and replace it with fresh litter. I only do a complete clean of the litter box every once a week…but then again I’ve got two bunnies to take care of.
Hmmm…I guess rather than having to completely clean the litter every 3rd day you could just scoop out the areas that’s pretty bad and scoop in some fresh litter. It’s much faster that way and you can do a full cleaning every once a week. ~ =)

How do you plan on controlling how much you put in and spreading it out? Baking soda is toxic to bunnies, however, very very small quantities should not matter. If you must use baking soda, I’d suggest litter that already combines a little baking soda (more controlled amount than sprinkling it yourself) so that if it is accidentally consumed, it won’t be much. Of course, you’ll also need to monitor to making sure a large quantity of litter isn’t consumed.
