I rescued some baby rabbits about a week ago. (The mom was killed) They’ve been thriving, but just now when I went to pick one up, guts spilled out in my hand. It was horrible. The poor thing can still hop and struggle, but it has guts out.

I picked it up again (with gloves this time) and examined it. There is a little gash in its side and a glob of guts is hanging out. It wasn’t like that yesterday. I didn’t pick it up this morning though.

We have cats, but the rabbits are in a pet carrier. Could it have been possible one of the cats stuck her paw in and slashed the bunny? I think it probably is what happened since the gash is on its side.

Also, how likely is it for the baby bunnies to have rabies? They show no signs, but now I’m paranoid since I touched bunny guts.

I haven’t been able to catch the other bunny to examine it. It is too fast so it’s probably fine, right?

          Eek, poor thing!
          I’m guessing this is cottontails?
I agree that is probably what’s happened or another animal got to it before you discovered them.
The risk of infection now is high.

Try contact a wildlife rehabber in your area.

Yeah they’re cottontails. They’ve been indoors for a week so it had to have happened in the last day and the cats are the only other animals around.
I’ll call someone tomorrow. I’ve been caring for them, not knowing what to do with them lol. I never thought about calling someone.

Yeah, I heard the cottontail kits are difficult to get to survive so you’ve done great so far!

There are likely regulations about having them and then the areas to release them so a rehabber is your best bet. The injured one will probably need prompt vet care.

I agree, I would contact a rehabber and relinquish them.

I don’t know what to tell you about the injury… that is very bizarre. :o(

Thanks. Apparently the injury had JUST happened when I found it last night because there wasn’t much blood at all.

This morning the bunny was dead and there was blood everywhere. It was horrible.

I called the vet this morning and have the remaining bunny to her. She regularly cares for wild animals until a rehabilitation center can take them. She had 3 baby deer just last month at her office. So I think the baby will be just fine with her.
