So Bindi’s eyes have been running for a while. It’s off and on but lately has been more intense. The fur at the corner of his eyes is pretty damp. It’s just clear and doesn’t bother him. This has happened before and my vet suspected sinusitis and put him on Oral Baytril. It seemed to help but as soon as we stopped, it recurred.

I just e-mailed her and she sais she suspects sinusitis again and he should go on oral meds. I’m upset and frustrated. I don’t want to put him on meds, just like that. He has no other symptoms of sinusitis. Wouldn’t it make sense for him to have a runny nose and/or sneezing?

Under his eye, if I masage there, I can feel sort of  a crinkly, fluidy filled area (hard to describe) which makes me suspect blocked duct. He’s never had them flushed. Someone had mentioned here before that you can unblock them with a massage?

I can’t remember when it was (during the past year sometime) but he had an Xray that showed inflammation of the bone in his nose. He was treated on antibitoics several times.

I’m just stressed about this. I’m going to Toronto on Thursday and won’t be back till Monday, the 30th. I doubt very much Ricky will be able to give him the meds. I wanted a nice stress free trip.   I go like a month with no animal problems…..then sometime comes up. Usually involving Bindi.

        Sigh….

Bummer! He certainly has some chronic things going on.

What about medicated eye drops? Would they made any difference?

Could you get the baytril flavoured so it’s irresistible to him? Or maybe Ricky could give injections instead. Some tolerate that better then a syringe in the mouth.

I’ve been using a medicated ointment and it’s not helping.

He’s going in early next week for her to try to flush the tear ducts and then she’s going to put him on antibiotics. Ricky is just going to have to deal, I guess. They always flavour it but he still hates it. I don’t blame him, it smells like banana flavoured rubbing alcohol. I just don’t want to be stressed about his appetite, poops, etc while I’m away. I know his usual hay eating/poop situation. Ricky doesn’t.

If it is sinusitis or rinitis, I just can’t understand why he doesn’t have a runny nose or sneezing. From everything I’ve read those are the most common symptoms.

With no sneezing or nasal discharge, it might indicate no infection or one that hasn’t progressed to that stage. That would be a plus!!

If there is a constriction on the duct it would start with a slow flow problem and infection is a secondary result.
Since baytril has helped before, there probably is a bit if bacterial infection but you’re keeping on top of it.

Under his eye, if I masage there, I can feel sort of a crinkly, fluidy filled area (hard to describe) which makes me suspect blocked duct. He’s never had them flushed.

Before your vet does a flush, perhaps ask if she is able to manually express the sac under the eye first. If successful, it’s something you could do at home.
Kafrns StuBob used to get white pus buildup unfortunately. When i bunny sat her, I was able to do get a lot out up through the eye. It helped keep her eye cleaner.

Given Bindi’s history if tooth spurs, I’d say there’s a high chance this is related to dental disease. It’s the incisor roots that can commonly affect the duct.

Have you read up on the term Epiphora (excessive tears) with rabbits? If not, you might gain more clues then what you’d find on rhinitis/sinusitis.

LPT are the pockets of crinkly stuff under both eyes or just one?
The vet has ruled out any abscesses in his face, right?
And did Bindi’s xray show elongated tooth roots or not? I don’t remember if you said anything about that last time.

Don’t know if you’ve had a chance to read my email, but I also wonder if he is getting hay dust or some other irritant in his eyes or nose. Mimzy is so much better after not having that particular hay this week…so far, so good.

(((((((((((((Many healthy bunny vibes)))))))))))) for Mr. Bindi Loo. I hope he and Ricky will do well while you’re away. xx

I will ask my vet that, Jersey. And I will def ask her to check his teeth.

Mimz- The head X-rays showed that his tooth roots were okay last time. That was my main concern. They didn’t show any abscesses either. The pockets are under both eyes, sometimes they feel bigger.

Bindi eats Oxbow Western Timothy, the same he’s eaten pretty much all his life. It’s not dusty, if I do end up getting a dusty bag, picky Momma that I am, I toss it out.

I was upset about the situation when Ricky got home last night but he assured me Bindi will have the best of care while I”m gone.

Aw! Yay for great bunny Dads.

Try not let Bindi pick up on your stress.

I know it would be hard being away from the babies even when they’re in best of health. No doubt the events of last year add to your stress.
But you deserve to get away and enjoy yourself.

Look at this as an opportunity for Ricky to become as rabbit-savvy as you. Well almost as much.

Bindi’s appointment went well. He was there all day, poor guy, since they are so busy and squeezed him in.

They flushed both his eyes. The right eye had a lot of blockage which is the eye that is usually the most runny. He’s not on meds (I’m so relieved). We are just going to see how he makes out in a few weeks. Hopefully the flush will do some good.

I’m so relieved he won’t be on meds while I’m gone.

I’m just catching up with this. So glad the flush went well. Sounds like that was the problem, I sure hope so.

Also good to hear he doesn’t have to take anything while you’re away. I bet Ricky is relieved!

I hope you have a wonderful time at Bunfest! Snuggles to Bindi and Olivia! xx

I hope it gives some relief.

Im curious, did the stuff come out via the eye or down through his nose?

                                    Thanks, Mimz

Jersey, I’m not sure about that. I will have to check with the vet next time.
