I have an exercise pen securely attached to my bunny's cage with zip ties.  It is pretty sturdy.  I haven't worked out yet how I am going to ultimately give her more space since she can't have free roam…maybe attaching two pens together? Anyway, In order to make sure she is getting out enough when I am not around, I would like to leave her cage door open to the pen.  She can't jump out and I do have a cover I can put on it. It still makes me nervous to leave her cage door open when I am not home or overnight though.  Does anyone else leave access to their playpen when unsupervised?

BTW: she is a new bunny for me (my first).  I've had her for almost three weeks. There is so much to learn but I am beyond in love!

        Thanks!

Albus’ xpen is his cage so he’s in there when I’m out or asleep. he can’t get out, and it’s secure. As long as your bun is safe and she can’t escape then I wouldn’t worry.

Hi I have the same type of set up for my new bunny until she is spayed and can be bonded with my other bunny. I too am nervous about leaving the cage door open at all times because she does try and had in the past had gotten out. So at night I do close the door or if I am going to go somewhere I put her in her cage till I am back. She seems fine about it. I too have thought about extending mine as well. That’s not a bad idea. If she hasn’t shown any signs of trying to get out give it a try. Oh and congrats on your new bunny.

Thank you both!! I am excited and looking forward to making my bun’s environment more suitable for her.

My buns have a 4’x2′ cage connected to an xpen and that is their standard set up which they have access to at all times. When I’m home, I open up the xpen and they have a whole room, sometimes multiple rooms (when the dog isn’t around).

Just make sure she’s not able to escape first. I used the cage+xpen set up with my boy for a year with no issues. Once my pair was bonded, my girl taught me that there were multiple escape routes. lol She hasn’t escaped in a couple years though, so it just took some trial and error once we figured out how she was getting out.

Never underestimate a rabbit, they are excellent problem solvers… For this reason I would not recommend leaving your bunny free when you are out.. Starsky can clear part of his Xpen easily, he does this by launching off the side of his litter tray to gain more height. When I cut off that option by raising the bars he worked his way around the pen till he figured out how to lift the access door and unlatch it… Pipi does the same thing in the big bunny room, then she head buts the Xpen whilst the others push on the end so that it concertina’s up allowing everybunny out into the food storage area…. They now realise that the baby gate leads to new exciting areas and they have made that the focus of their attentions….. So… No I would not leave her out when you are not there. At night would be OK as long as she is indoors and can’t get too far… I have to worry about Starsky during the day as he has been watching the cats and has figured out the cat flap. Last escape he made a beeline for it..

Roberta… Do you think maybe you should have named Starsky, MacGyver instead?
