Just having a major panic as to a decision I made at the weekend.  The story so far, about 4 months ago we decided that Buckley, my little dwarf would benefit from having a “friend”, so I had him neutered and got myself approved at a local rescue to take on an older doe.  I wanted an ”older woman” as Buckley is very shy and I thought an older one would be able to teach him what being a rabbit is about and bring him out of his shell.  I had in my mind a lop of some sorts, with a fat head so I could give it a really good head rub (Buckley’s head is very small and you can only stroke his forehead with your little finger!), with chubby cheeks, because they’re sooo cute and long floppy ears (because everyone knows a real rabbit has long floppy ears!) Anyway, on Thursday I got a call from the rescue who, after 4 months have had their first unbonded female come in and they invited me to go along and view.

My son and I went and visited Sweet Pea, she was described to me as a Silver Fox, but they’re now saying this is the colour and not the breed, and that she’s a “Standard” – is this the breed?  I really don’t understand what breed she is. Anyway we met her, she is much younger than Buckley, has sticky up ears and a small face, ie, everything I didn’t want in a rabbit, BUT it was love at first site, she was such a lovely friently little thing that we decided there and then to offer her a forever home.

I’m now terrified of the decision I’ve made, taking on another rabbit for a 10-12 year (or more) commitment, what if she isn’t as well behaved as Buckley? What if she destroys my house (hubby says he’ll divorce me if she does!), what if she develops health problems (will be insured).  I’m just having the usual panics that everyone has (please tell me everyone else panics too?)

Also can someone please try and identify what breed she is, the centre were advised that she’s 6 months old, but due to her small size, they suspect she might be younger, but if you have any ideas, they would be gratefully received:-

When she was handed into the rescue her name was Grey, they didn’t like this so called her Sweet Pea, which I think is utterly gorgeous, unfortunately I’m being outnumbered and my son/rescue centre want to rename her Holly.  I rather like Sweet Pea and would love to keep it.

So, an identiity to the bree and some reassurance I’ve not made a mistake would be very gratefully received.

        Thanks guys x

I have a Silver Fox called Pascal, they are a larger breed than the Tans of Silver Martens. Sweetpea looks very similar which means she is probably a satin coat.. My Pascal is the sweetest most loving bun… Very good natured and likes attention. If she is small with dainty front legs I would say Silver Marten if she is cobby (short solid front legs) she is a Silver Fox…My Pepper is a Silver Marten, very dainty but full of attitude, but still loves her Mum. Little black bunnies are the best.

Signature pics, Pascal in the middle Pepper far right. Pepper is bonded with Piglet and adores her husbun… Pascal is going to be bonded with Nermal Nomnoms immediately to the right of the pic of Pascal.

It is possible to not know the exact breed since she was a rescue – it’s a guessing game at best sometimes.

                =)

Yes, I panicked too with my first two. I almost randomly adopted them without any knowledge (had to know a little and be a little prepared to be vetted but still… had no idea what I was doing). I too went in wanting a lop and somehow did not end up with lops. Only wanted one bun too!

I went back on the adoption anniversary this year and somehow came back with another bun, again, somehow not a lop; I did take my buns as usual but it really wasn’t my intention to walk out with another bun. As I drove home I kept thinking, what did I just do?! My two was already a handful with having to clean up after them, destroying enough vacuum cleaners, and finding and paying for a sitter when I want to travel was hard. The thought that I’d just call back and say it was a mistake did cross my mind. In the end though, if you are responsible, it’ll work out because you’ll make it work.

Thanks guys, If her breed cannot be determined because she’s a rescue, how would I register her with a vet as they always ask for the breed?

I guess I had the same reaction when I got pregnant, even though it was planned, when the blue line came up on the dip stick thing, it still went through my mine “OMG, what have I done?” I guess it’s all about commitment. I don’t have worries about sitters as my local pet shop offers a residential service and at £2 per night ($3) for a single bun, I doubt it would be much more for a pair.

I can see Roberta that your two are very similar to Sweet Pea/Holly. I haven’t got her yet so I couldn’t tell the length of her front legs. I have to get a date to take Buckley in as the rescue is going to bond them for me and I guess it’s down to Buckley to decide if we bring her home or not!

                  x

Rescues want it to work out so if a rabbit isn’t the right fit for a family, I think they’ll generally take them back. Sometimes its in the adoption contract.

Hopefully this gorgeous bun will work out for you though!

Will she be spayed before adoption? At 6 months, her hormones could corrupt her sweet nature for a while.

At the vets, I just have mine listed as mix breed if I don’t know specifics. Lots of vets just put dwarf in the files.

My Vet asked for breed on my little girls, when I advised that French Angora Piglet was the daddy and Silver Marten Pepper was mummy they put down Rabbit X. I think she is a Silver Fox but once you see her size and whether she has stocky or dainty legs you should be able to tell.

If things don’t work out – just contact the rescuce.

My husband and I brought home a rabbit from a rescue to be a companion to our Baxter. Unfortunately the bun didn’t care for us or Baxter, and it was really stressing out Baxter, so I called the rescue, who welcomed him back. He was actually happy to go back to people he knew…which made us feel better about our decision, and we let the rescue keep the $$ – so they were happy 🙂

Relax – and see how things go with Sweat pea.

When I adopted my pair from the SPCA they told me that if I later wanted to take another rabbit (or even if I had taken two unbonded rabbits at the one time) it would only be fostered with me until and if it bonded with the one(s) I was officially adopting. Since the rescue is doing the hard part for you (wish someone here would, I’d get a third one in a heart beat if I could put the bonding process in safe hands) then they will be doing the most difficult bit and if they aren’t a match you won’t need to worry. If they are then I hope you do take her, for your rabbit’s sake. (And of course if they do bond once they are bonded they can’t be separated.) I had a single rabbit, and he was friends with my cats, but I now realize how lonely a life he had. Seeing these two together, knowing they always have company just a hop away, … it feels so much better. I love to sit with them just to see them interacting, sharing with each other, my other little one was loved and well cared for, but I do feel that this pair are happy. I know solitary rabbits can have excellent lives with their humans but it just can’t be the same as having a friend all your own who Truly understands you and speaks your language.

And yes I know the panic thing, … definitely did it with both my cats, and a little with these rabbits too. I’ve never regreted any of them though, … my last cat is my Shepherd’s best friend in the whole world (and what an irritating pair they make) some times things work out in the most unexpected and wonderful ways.

She’s beautiful. I know how you feel, I stress about everything. Remember you need to R-E-L-A-X for bonding!

When do you bring her home? I’m sure us BBers can help you with any problems that may arise.

Thanks guys, I’m very fortunate that the rescue are going to do the bonding for me. Buckley will spend 4 days with them and they will introduce him to Sweet Pea/Holly and see how they get on, at the end of the day, it’s Buckley’s decision. They have said that she’s too young just yet to be neutered so I’d have to take her back for them to do it when she’s old enough. I have a voicemail message left for me today saying that she will not be available for 3 weeks as she needs time for her jabs to take effect, so realistically I’m not going to get her home for at least 4 weeks but they have reserved her for me – I just checked their website and she has a “reserved” sign across her picture ) – happy (but scary) days! x

                                  Definitely silver marten looking.
Looks just like my last bun.
