        Hi Guys,

One of our (WASAR’s) Foster carers has found sores on her bunnies back. It has been vet checked and the vet thought they were wounds fro a playdate with another rather dominant foster. Our carer is not so sure and is very concerned… Will paste her post below. Any input we can take back to the vet would be appreciated… Photo’s pending

Anyone know what could cause sores on a rabbit’s back? Vulcan has round sores about 5-10mm in diameter on his back about 2cm back from the base of his ears. He doesn’t have any redness on his ears, eyes, mouth or nose. All his behaviour is completely normal and he is not scratching more than normal.
He saw the vet Thursday and she thought they were injuries from Binky but I think there is more now. None of the other rabbits have these wounds. Is it possible he is allergic to the oats I’ve started giving him? Would it present like this? What about a reaction to the vaccine he got a few weeks back? He healed quickly from his neuter so it seems unlikely that his immune system is compromised. Just worried about the little guy

Apollo got a sore on his back in around the same place, and the same size too! It was a funny scab sort of thing, and it made the fur fall out around there. It happened after he got his vaccine too! I went to the vet, and she prescribed me some cream for it…can’t remember it’s name, it was just a basic one though, nothing specific. It took 3-4 weeks to heal up! Sounds the same to me!

It was about a week after his neuter and vaccines that it appeared. Was her little guy done at Wanerroo vets?

I really don’t know. Have all of the usual suspects been ruled out… mites, fleas, other parasites? Was he given any type of treatment that he could be having an adverse reaction to? If his mate is a humper, it is likely that it could be from him trying to “latch on”.

Remember, we don’t have vaccines here in the US, so I really don’t know if that type of reaction is common following vaccines. That’s interesting that bunnygirl had a similar experience…

It was Unusual Pet Vets in Balcatta… But same vaccine I would assume… Little Vulcan came in with a dodgy back leg, hence his name. He has not had mites treatment so both are high on the possibility register.

Yes, same place, same size, around the same time. Poor guy

Hi BG, Try and remember or find out what the cream was… Timeline fits with a vaccine reaction.
We have found a vet that does rescue discounts that is well known and local.

Really racking my brains to try and remember Roberta but it was almost a year ago…the vet just prescribed it as a basic ‘anti-biotic’ cream if you like, it was specially for the reaction caused by the vaccine. Did Arminta tell the vet about the vaccine being done before this appeared?

pic… looks like a bite… but what would cause bites to stay this long ?

It could certainly be “cylap burn” judging on its location.

This is the reaction one of mine had after his first vaccination:

Yes! Apollos looked just like Jerseys pictures, but it also had the funny, deeper, red bit on your picture Roberta. High possibility?

Was there only a single wound… Arminta mentioned there are additional scabs, I will have to double check.

The vaccine can move and cause reactions elsewhere. Sometimes even at the front leg.
I vaccinated at home last time so I made sure to really massage the area after for several minutes.

I’d really like to see an alternative vaccine available here in Australia. The UK has a couple available that are gentler.
