I tried finding this answer on my own and couldn’t. Maybe I am not googling well enough  Hopefully someone on here can help me out. Our roomates (fiance’s brother and his girlfriend) live with us. They have rats and as hard as I try to explain to them that their rats might be sick they dont listen. Its extremely frustrating but its also kind of worrying me. Is it possible for mycoplasma to be spread to our rabbits? They dont wash their hands after handling the rats and then they often come right downstairs and pet my babies. I really hope the answer is no, I dont want to sound like a *bad word* and tell them they cant touch our rabbits anymore unless they wash their hands. If it comes to my rabbit’s health though I will have to suck it up and tell them.

I’m fairly sure that it’s species – specific, so you don’t need to worry! Might be best to check with your vet if you’re concerned though.

Only thing I’ve found is mycoplasma pulmonis (commonly carried by pet rats) found in resp. tract of 2 rabbits but didnt cause clinical disease. They did have URI but not due to that bacteria.
That was my basic understanding anyway… I didn’t read a full report or anything.

I agree with Tessie’s advice. Ask your vet if there are concerns about rats passing anything on to rabbits and vice versa.

If you don’t get a definitive answer anywhere, is this always going to weigh on your mind?
It might be best some house rules be in place regardless. It could be approached in a way to offer protection for both pets.

I think Jersey is right. It is something that can possible be found in rabbits, but it doesn’t cause symptoms. There are many different kinds of bacteria that rabbits can have and most of the time they don’t cause any problems. So I wouldn’t be terribly worried. I do think that, like Jersey said, you should take this opportunity to set some house rules. If your housemates are going to pet your rabbits, you need to make sure they are following the same steps you are. Even I will wash my hands if I pet my dog if I plan to go interact with my buns. Not that I think she has something that the rabbits could get, I just do. So perhaps some general rules wouldn’t be a bad idea.

I found this info on ratguide & it might ease your mind further. A fantastic, informative site by the way!

                  M. pulmonis is non-pathogenic to humans, and even though it can be carried by humans in the nasal passages for short periods of time, you yourself cannot be infected. In addition, because mycoplasmas are very fragile organisms and rarely remain viable outside the host for long periods makes it nearly impossible for it to be transmitted through fomites (e.g., equipment in cages, or carried on clothing). However, how rapidly transmission occurs may vary among rats within a colony based on: husbandry practices, environment, and how many rats within the colony.

Jersey – That makes sense since mycoplasma doesn’t have a cell wall like most other bacteria.

I’ll take your word for it LBJ!

But tell me this. Why did I immediately think “no cell wall” then “Spongebob”

                      ???

Lol, sorry. It’s almost 4am here.

Oddly enough, that is a logical train of thought. LOL
