my bunny has access to fresh timothy hay and fresh water 24/7, i also feed him a treat or two after play time when he goes back into his cage for the night. i feed him timothy hay based pellets or whatever and whenever i go to see him the food bowl is always empty. should he always have acess to pellets? hes only like 3-4 pounds and i feed him 1/4 a cup, sometimes a little more, but should his pellet bowl always have pellets ? are pellets even necessary ?

No, he shouldn’t have unlimited pellets. You should check with your vet the proper amount to feed him if you are concerned but you’re giving the normal amount. Some buns need more while others need less; I’ve heard of buns live pellet free but I have a bun who needs pellets so it really depends on the bun.

As an adult rabbit he doesn’t need constant access to pellets. Most rabbits love them and will eat them quickly so don’t worry about them disappearing fast.

If you take a look at the article on this page: http://rabbit.org/suggested-vegetables-and-fruits-for-a-rabbit-diet/ you can verify how much a rabbit that weighs as much as yours does should be eating, … not only the quantity of pellets but of greens, vegetables and fruits as well. It is always calculated according to the rabbit’s weight.

The recommended daily diet for an adult rabbit is:
1/4 – 1/2 cup plain pellets per 6 lbs body weight.
2 cups of bunny safe veggies per 6 lbs body weight
                  Unlimited hay & water

                  Check out:

Some people do choose to feed their rabbits a pellet free diet. This is something that should be discussed with your vet. For a rabbit to get proper nutrition and calories from veggies and hay only they usually need about 10+ types of veggies in much larger quantities daily to maintain good health and weight. Pellet free is hard to manage for some people, it involves some trial and error, and depending on the cost of produce in your area can get expensive.

Yep, an adult rabbit should have an appropriate ration of pellets. Mine gobble theirs fast, but that is all they get until it is time to feed them again. As long as yours has access to hay and water, he will be fine. Veggies are also important. Does he get a salad every day?
