I don’t know how old my Nellie is, but I’m estimating that she’s just over 3 to 3 1/2 months now. Since I got her two months ago, she’s been eating alfalfa hay, because I read that it was best for babies under 7 months. The problem is though, the only place to get alfalfa hay is driving 35 minutes from my house to a pet store out of town. However, our local store that is only a block or two over from me sells timothy hay. I was wondering if it would hurt Nellie to give her Timothy now? What are the advantages of keeping a rabbit on alfalfa until 7 months? It is such a hassle and so expensive driving all that way for alfalfa.

Added picture of Nellie Belle cuz I kinda love her <3

All of mine were raised on oaten hay..I started adding small servings of meadow hay to their diet once or twice a week only last year. Of course they also had unlimited greens and pellets as babies (even Pepper and Piglet were only a few weeks old when rescued) My vet says they have beautiful teeth and are all very healthy, even if Blossom is a stresshead…

After doing some reading, I decided to go with Timothy hay for Bumpy, since he was already eating alfalfa pellets. That and the fact I was buying a 50# bale online and shipping was nearly the cost of the bale. I knew that amount of hay would last him long past his baby time and would have to be transitioned to a non-alfalfa hay anyway. I’m trying to find a local farmer that will sell me a bale cheaper, but I’ve got so much here now that it isn’t as big of a priority yet. He has been eating less hay than he did a week ago, not sure if he’s bored of it, or if it’s because he’s growing up. I think I may do what Roberta is doing and add some different types to see if all he wanted is a variety.

I think as long as Nellie is on alfalfa pellets that the other types of hay would be just fine. She’s really growing up! So pretty.

Alfalfa hay helps young buns grow and put on some weight. As long as you are feeding Nellie alfalfa pellets you can try to transition her to Timothy. This combo is exactly what my bun has been on.
