        Hello! Im new here!

I have an appointment for my 4 year old lionhead bunny to get spayed on thursday and im so nervous about it. I know you are supposed to spay at an ealier time but ive been putting it off and finally decided I should before its too late! It was really hard finding a vet to do it in my city for some reason but I found one at a clinic ive been to before for my mom’s dogs (and they were very nice for what i can remember!). Ive learned this vet also works on other exotic animals (from the zoo) so im hoping that he will do a good job since he seems very knowledgable about animals!

Do bunny deaths happen that often after getting spayed? Or is it a rare thing? Does anyone have any experiences theyd like to share or any advice to give me?

Im hoping this will also help my bunny’s bratty behavior, because she is a brat sometimes!!

        Thanks everyone!

Bunny deaths during spaying are rare. The odds of any animal (dog cat bun) dying under anesthesia are related to A: The experience of the vet with that particular animal, and B: The health of the animal at the time of surgery. Most healthy animals do just fine. Your bun is 4 so there is probably no hidden heart defect that would cause harm or it would probably have done so by now. Most animals do fine after surgery with maybe a little pain med the first day or two. (Since bunnies are low to the ground and tend to sit in their litter a lot, the vet may also prescribe antibiotics, or tell you just to keep an eye out for infection. My 5 1/2 mo old bun is being spayed in a week, so check back in here and let us know how she did.

Bunny deaths during spay/neuter are rare if the vet is bun savvy. I believe I read the number is somewhere around 1%. My vet did my girl at 4 months (estimated) old and she did fine, was back to trying to binky in about 2 days (though she wasn’t allowed due to stitches!).

Make sure you grab some pain meds to take home if it’s not standard, the girls can be in a lot of pain. If she doesn’t eat the first day home that is pretty normal, provide fresh water and fresh wet veggies. Pellets and hay are the last things they go for, veggies tend to go over better. Make sure to scrub down the area, litter box etc to avoid infection. And keep her confined a bit so she doesn’t tear the stitches trying to run / jump. Oh and bunnies do NOT need to be fasted, so if your vet says to do that, it’s a red flag on them (the vet, not just the receptionist).

If anyone checks back I would like to say that bunny’s spaying went perfectly well! The doctor was VERY nice and understanding and took great care of her! He said she was very healthy and they even gave her nails a good clippin :&#160 Hehe. Im very happy she is back. She hasnt eaten anything yet (or drank) but I gave her a frozen water bottle (because its quite hot here) if she gets too hot and she enjoys licking the water droplets off it so that is good!

Thanks again for your replies :&#160

That’s great news! I was so nervous too when my bun was desexed. Now you can relax! And wait for her to become perfectly well behaved
