To be clear our bunny shadow is eating.  She eats her pellets, she eats her carrots, her hay, drinks her water her parsley but lately it takes her forever to eat her green leaf lettuce.  I don’t understand she eventually eats it and she is going to the bathroom so I am not too concerned but concerned  enough to post .   I mean I guess if you were eating lettuce everyday for breakfast and lunch I would understand but why isn’t she turning her nose up at the carrots, blueberries, etc  ?

She may be sick of lettuce. I know if I give my rabbit the same thing for too long, he’ll stop eating it but still eat everything else. So I try to rotate the veggies I offer, giving him at least three different kinds when he gets his salad. This is also good for him because each veggie has different types of vitamins and nutrients.

Have you tried giving her other leafy greens? Mine love cilantro, arugula and kale. I know other bunnies love mint. If you do try some new veggies, you need to introduce them slowly, one at a time. Here’s an article with a list of bunny safe greens and veggies.

Also, carrots and blueberries are like candy to rabbits, which helps explain why she always eats them. But because of this they should be limited. The article I linked to above explains more about this.

Okay thank you. Reading the article and planning our next shopping trip.

Yep, it’s very possible she’s getting a bit bored with the same thing every day. Bunnies love sweeter things like fruit and carrots so she won’t turn those down but lettuce is just lettuce… they like it but it’s definitely not candy status in their minds. You can work on slowly introducing her to some new veggies and get a rotation into her diet. My bunny really loves red leaf lettuce, curly lettuce (i’m sure there is a more official name for it but idk what it is), bok choi and spinach. She’s recently been really into chicory too. The suggested is usually 3 different kinds of veggies a day but more variety than that is never a bad thing either. You don’t need to stop feeding her the green lettuce or anything, just let her try some new things and rotate them so she doesn’t get too bored with her diet.

Mine get bored sometimes too. Or a batch of lettuce is “bad” according to them. I got a big tub of spring mix for them and for some reason they turned their noses up at it. Picky little brats.

My bunnies like variation. It’s very clear. If I give them the same veggies/leafy greens for more than 3 days, they won’t finish it eagerly but stand on their hind legs and look for sth else. Apple-leaves are delicious – but not every day. Stop them coming for 3-4 days, then apple-leaves are delicious again. Same with all other veggies and greens.

In nature rabbits eat a lot of different plants, so they get a little bit of this mineral/vitamin and a little bit of that etc. Maybe that’s why they tire of eating the same greens for a longer period, some sort of instinct.

Some “batches” of greens they won’t eat. I’ve never had that with stuff I’ve grown myself, only with store-bought stuff. I sometimes suspect pesticides, systemic, the kinds that don’t go away with rinsing. But I could be just paranoid. Rabbits do have an excellent sense of smell though.

Bam, no this was organic spring mix. I don’t know what the problem was.

Dobby dislikes most of the things I buy from the farmers market but is OK with the stuff (organic or otherwise) that I buy from the grocery store. They can be so funny some times. Or, really, most of the time.

LBJ, I’ve had that too. Not long ago I bought 2 beautiful heads of organic red lettuce for my boys, but they wouldn’t touch it. I didn’t give them any other greens that day because I thought they bloody well should eat that expensive lettuce. But no. Boys no like. Boys no eat.

Dobby, bunnies really are funny most of the time =) They keep your brain busy =)
