I’m hoping someone can help me on this…  I have male mini rex who is almost 2 yrs old.  I just got him a couple of weeks ago.  He’s very friendly and well litter trained.  He is not neutured.  I’m not sure if this is something I should have done.  So far he does not have any behavioural problems and doesn’t spray urine.  I would rather not put him through unnecessary (& costly) surgery.

Let me know your experience with your males to help me decide on this. Thx!!

Is there any chance that you might get a second rabbit in the future? Sometimes, people have no intention of doing so, then certain circumstances happen and they find themselves with another rabbit. That would be one good reason to neuter your rabbit now. He would be ready to be bonded with another rabbit (it would have to be spayed or neutered, of course) if this were to happen.

The topic of not neutering single male rabbits has been brought up in the forums before. You could probably find those threads in a search.

We decided not to neuter Porky. I know I posted a long point by point pros and cons on this board at least once. Basically to summarize, there are certain specific reason to neuter. They apply to many male bunnies but not Porky. We decided to skip the pain and risks of surgery. All is good, for us but wouldn’t necessarily be for others.

I didn’t neuter my first male rabbit until he started showing unacceptable behaviour (peeing in sofa etc) about a year after I got him. I don’t know how old he was then. As eepster points out, there are a number of specific reasons to neuter male rabbits, but there are no important health-benefits for the bunny himself with neutering a male if you’ve only got the one rabbit.

But if you’re thinking about getting another bunny, neutering is of course a must, whether you get a boy or a girl. Unneutered boys will fight like mad dogs and boy + girl of course results in babies.

I think I may have to go ahead with the surgery. He’s starting to poop outside his cage and maybe even spray (there’s a werid smell in my dining area now). Might be best to stop these bad habits before they get out of hand.

Your last comment is exactly what my vet said. “Best to stop the bad habits before they become permanent.”
I just got my male neutered this last Friday. He’s fine. The worst part is having to leave him in his cage to heal.

I’ve read people mention the expense many times…
I’m interested in what everyone has had to pay for their spay/neuter.
I only paid $55 for Peanut’s neuter, and my vet is rabbit savvy.

I “sponsored” Rodgers neuter (he had to be neutered before I was allowed to adopt) it was only $25 and he was free-ranging two days later. (When we brought him home). I wasn’t told to pin him up or anything so he’s not.

I’m so jealous of your flemmy! What a cutie!
My vet said he needed to stay in a small area where he couldn’t run around much, because here they don’t give them stitches or glue. They just push the skin together and it holds, because it’s so thin.
So I gave him 3 days in the cage (he has a large cage)…And he wanted out after that, so I figured he knew how he felt and I let him out. He’s been fine.

$25 is excellent for a neuter!

he is not neutered but i am planing to get him neutered

How long should i wait after i get him to get him neutered?
Is an almost 1 year old still ok to get neutered?
how long will it take for his stiches to heal, and his to be back to normal?

And if somebody could give me a good name for him that would be great, he is Brown/tan

                            I’d neuter him immediately.
He’s still fine to get neutered at his age. I’m not sure how long it takes stitches to heal, but my boy was neutered a week ago and it will take one month for his stitches to be absorbed. He runs around and binkied and eats just fine, though. He has since the day after his neuter. (:
The first name that popped into my head was Bucky. Good luck with your new bunny!!

I agree with Timberlee, I’d get the neuter out of the way early and 12 months is fine, not too old. My French Angora Piglet was done much earlier after discovering that his best buddy Pepper was in fact a girl… Unfortunately I left it a whisker too late and let them back together a week too soon.
Names for someting brownish and fluffy…Mmmmmm How about Louis Bunstrong after Louis Armstrong or his nick name “Satchmo”

The Tech that I talked to on the phone today told me that if my bunny needs to be hospitalized it will be $56 but if they send him home same day (a good possibility as it’s so stressful there) it will be around $35. Very very cheap compared to the dogs who cost $45 (with a shelter waiver, would have been much more without) and $80. I didn’t ask about a spay but it’s probably around the same price at this particular clinic as that’s how they roll.
