Okay so I recently purchased a female lionhead. She is now about two months old. I ran out of hay blocks (Tiny little blocks about two inches wide) late last night/early this morning. She only gets 1/2-1 1/2 of those things eery 2-3 days, because she eats them slowly, so she eats very little hay to begin with. My question is-will she be allright until tomorrow evening? Can I give her grass (I can probably find some dry grass in my backyard) to tide her over? I just cleaned her cage, so she’s been eating grass for 10-15 minutes. Will that be enough? I am seriously concerned for her. Thank you! -Meghan & Paris

Your bun needs to be eating actual hay, the kind that is bagged in stores or that you get from a farm, not the hay that has been compressed into the tiny cubes, if that’s what you’re talking about. These things happen, and if you absolutely can’t get to a store, ad long as she eats her veggies and pellets, she should be fine. She also needs unlimited access to hay, not just a small piece of a cube.

The pet store said to not feed her any fruits/veggies until she is at least 6 months old. Should I give her a piece of celery since it’s high in fiber, or will it give her diarrea? And yes-I realized that I need to give her more hay, and not the cubes. I should have done a bit more homework on diets… :/

I ditto everything Foo said. Your bunny needs unlimited access to real hay aka horse hay. The hay cubes are more like a treat/toy and should not be your bunnies primary hay source.

I didn’t see your second comment before I posted above.

DON’T feed veggies if she hasn’t had them before. This can cause digestive issues. You can introduce veggies at 3 months, slowly. It’s also recommended for a rabbit to have been eating grass hay for at least 2 weeks before adding veggies to their diet.

I agree with the others. When you make it to buy hay, make sure to get actual hay. Not the compressed cube things. Your bun with be fine until tomorrow evening. Although very important for their diet, being without hay for one day isn’t catastrophic.
