I was reading through the pinned First Aid thread (it’s great!) and I saw that Aloe Vera Gel was on the list of emergency supplies. Thread can be found here:

        I have two questions:
        1. What would it be used for?
        2. Is it safe to use? Aloe Vera is on a poisonous plant list. I’m sure it’s probably used topically so I’m asking more about accidental ingestion if they groom the area it’s applied, etc…

Just unsure on whether or not I should add this to my kit. Thanks!

Oh very interesting… I’m curious as well.

Side note, did you know they make aloe Vera drinks?! My husband drinks this green gunk and I asked what on earth it was and he simply goes, “it’s aloe Vera” sure enough he was drinking aloe Vera!! It even had goey like chunks in it :/. He made me try it. It wasn’t too bad they add sugar cane to sweeten it. But I won’t drink it lol I only tasted it. I’m a texture person and the idea of chunks against my tongue when I’m supposed to be drinking a liquid bothers me lol.

Anyhoo, I’ll be checking this out to see what someone says about aloe and the emergency kit!

            The gel is not poisonous.

Thanks Sarita! I just found a study that showed applying 10g topically had no negative effects. Another study did talk about the dangers of bunnies ingesting large quantities of it. But, the small amount most people would be applying to their rabbits, even if ingested, would likely be harmless. Good to know!

NBO – My grandfather drinks Aloe Vera Juice! He swears by it but I agree 100% about the funky texture, lol.

It’s not like your force feeding your rabbit the entire bottle right? (At least I hope you’re not! :\)

I’m not entirely sure what you would use it for to tell you the truth. It’s suppose to soothe sunburned skin and other skin problems. I don’t imagine your rabbit is going to get sunburned and if it’s a serious burn (from I don’t know what) aloe vera gel may not be enough and it’s so sticky I wouldn’t put it on my rabbits. Silvadene would be better for burns.

Muffinluv – That’s not the plan! For me, it being on the toxic list warranted a double check.

I’m not sure either really. I think it’s supposed to be soothing for abrasions as well? I found some old forum posts where people used it to loosen up gunk plugging up anal glands. Maybe for sore hocks but I have special cream for that… It might not be really worth it for me to put specifically in my rabbit kit. I’ll probably put some in my human kit though so it’ll be around.

                      Thanks again!

It definitely would be a good thing for a human medical kit. I’ve never even cleaned an anal gland but I guess if I did it might be okay for that….if I knew how to do that.
