So I noticed a couple days ago that my bunny wasn’t pooping and peeing in his litter box, or anywhere in his cage for that matter. At first I thought something was wrong with him. But I soon realized that he would only go poo and pee when I let him out into my balcony. (I let him run around the balcony everyday after work when I get home.) He holds his poo and pee in all day and waits untill I let him out. Then, he just goes crazy and poos everywhere! It’s literally like poop heaven in my balcony. Why is he acting this way? I don’t want him to keep doing this because I’m assuming that it’s awful for his health to keep his poop and urine in for so long. Any suggestions?

Also, he seems unhappy for some reason. When I get home, he usually runs out of his hidey house and rattles his cage to get attention haha. But lately, he’s been just chilling in the house and not really caring. Maybe he’s just more mature now?

(He’s around 10 months old and not neutered if that helps)

Could you put some of the poop and a paper towel with some of the urine in his litter box? That might help him understand what the litter box is for.

He’s been pooping and peeing in the litter box just fine up until a couple days ago. Usually, he also poops a little outside his litter box because he has pretty bad litter box habits, but these days there’s just no poop at all.

Hi I just signed up to this forum and was going to bring up this topic as well. My rabbit its 10 weeks old and does the same thing. I didn’t know rabbits could hold their pee and poop in for hours. It has me worried a bit also. I have tried what Dobby has suggested with her and it didn’t work for me but might work for you. I trained my other rabbit using the method Dobby mentioned above in 3 days.. My first rabbit is 9 months old and neutered. I think neutering your rabbit might help with this. Mine started to poop and pee right outside its cage. He got neutered and he no longer does that. As for him being unhappy my rabbit seems to be acting much like yours being they are close in age. He lays around more and plays less so maybe you are right and he is just maturing and settling down as is mine.

Do you have a litterbox on the balcony also? Before, has he always ran back to the cage to do his business? Is he free to hop in and out of the house (and onto the balcony) whenever he wants?

My rabbit only has litterboxes in her pen. She will hold her pee and poop until she’s back in her pen. I tried doing an outside-the-pen litterbox before, but it was never used, so I just took it away.

If the litter habits have taken a serious hit, another option is confining him to his cage for 2-3 days until he is using the litterbox exclusively. He’ll be angry and annoyed to not be let out, but that should reinforce where he needs to be doing his business.
