I’ve just started giving him a bigger playtime space and he loves it… I think. It took almost two days for him to get comfortable about jumping out of the step-through cage opening and now he jumps out every chance the door opens (even when he’s not supposed to but it’s adorable to watch so it’s okay). But I’ve noticed since he’s gotten more comfortable with being around me and more space, he hasn’t been emptying his food dish of pellets like he used to by the time I get home from work. I worried at first that something was wrong with his appetite, but he’ll eat when I’m home and when I hand feed him. The bunnies I see on forums and in videos seem to want to eat all the time and eats big heaps of hay – mine only eats some of his hay when using the litter box and hasn’t been finishing his 1/4 cup of pellets in a 9-hour time span.

Is it possible for bunnies to be “light” eaters or undereat while food is available? Or do I just have a lazy bunny that wants to be spoiled with attention getting hand-fed?

He’s probably just eating what he needs.

I know how you feel, my bunny is similar. He’s never been that keen on pellets and occassionally goes a few days without eating any. He also seems a bit picky about hay, he eats quite a lot of it but sometimes he has plenty in there but won’t eat any though as soon as I add more he goes straight for it. Weird.

He seems fine though and has plenty of energy. Sometimes I think the more I read about other people’s rabbits on here the more paranoid I become!

How old is he and how big is he? Could 1/4 a cup be too much?

                Thanks for the reassurance!

Rufus – I agree with becoming more paranoid from reading about other people’s rabbits! But it’s great when someone’s bunny shares similarities! =)

LBJ10 – he just turned 4 months yesterday so going off the HRS diet recommendation, he should still be getting unlimited pellets and unlimited hay until 7 months. I’ve only just started introducing veggies. He’s around 2 pounds or so (dunno exactly).

Okay, then it is alright to offer him unlimited pellets. Just because the pellets are there, doesn’t necessarily mean he will eat all of then all the time. Perhaps his growth is taking a break.
