Nellie is about 13 weeks old now. She is very sweet and very cuddly. When I got her, she was only 5 weeks old. (Her mom was a rescue that was brought into the shelter and passed away when the babies were 4 weeks old.) The man told me that she was a girl, but now that she is a little bit older, I wanted to double check. The only problem is, there is only one way Nellie will let me pick her up without freaking out, and there is no way to check the gender that way. I try to refrain from picking her up, obviously, but sometimes it is necessary, unfortunately, like now. What can I do?

Also, when I am lying in the floor, she will run up beside me, and as soon as I touch her head or her back, she flops down on her side suddenly. What does this mean?

Some times you have pick up your bunny even if they don’t like it. Hold her firmly so she can’t flail around and possibly hurt herself and try to make it quick. It might help to take her into a room she’s not used to (the bathroom or something) so that she’s a bit out of her element and therefore easier to handle.

Flopping is a good sign. It means she’s comfortable with you and all-around a pretty happy bunny.

Bpash gave good advice on how to secure her, but honestly, I wouldn’t worry about checking her sex yourself. It’s difficult to tell on a bunny, and if it’s going to stress her out and possibly cause you or her to get hurt, it’s not worth it right now.

If she has already been to the vet, the vet should have double-checked her sex for you. If not, the vet will double-check when you take her in for her first exam. You obviously want to know this before her spay (or neuter?) is scheduled.
