        Hi fellow Aussies,

I was just wondering what vaccinations I need to get for Rufus. Given that it’s been such a warm winter lately, I want to make sure he’s covered before all the mozzies come out! I know he needs the Calci virus shot. Is that all? Any idea how much I should be looking at paying?

At this stage the calici shot is the only one available… There are several campaigns demanding the release of the myxi vaccine but no victories yet.. The shot should be about $40-50.

$40-50 Roberta? Is that what you’d be charged or does that include consult fee?

That’s what I was charged as part of the speuter costs, they are just due for boosters now..

I knew I should have got it done when Rufus was neutered. I was just so ridiculously paranoid all logical thought went out the window! It’ll probably cost a heap more for a vet consult and vaccination. He’s my little cash vacuum!

If it’s any consolation, it’s better to neuter and vaccinate on separate occasions. Vaccines work by challenging the immune-system so it starts to produce antibodies. When an animal (or a person) just have been operated on, the immune-system is occupied with healing the surgical wounds. That may mean that the body won’t be able to make enough antibodies – or that the animal (or person) can’t cope with both these challenges and thus get very ill.

There is always a slight risk with any vaccine so the animal (or person) who gets them should be in as good health as possible when they are vaccinated.

My vet don’t examine the bunny before giving the vaccines (myxi and calici), but of course they ask if the bunny is healthy. With an examination it would be seriously unaffordable and people wouldn’t vaccinate their bunnies. If you feel confident that your bunny is well you could perhaps call several vets and ask them what their routines are like and their prices.

Thanks bam, that’s a really great point about immune systems, I don’t want to subject him to too much at one time.
