Hey guys! Some of you may know a few months ago I bought a store bought hutch, and removed the lid and added my own little custom top to it, as it was too dark having the lid on. As Belle is to be spayed in a few weeks and the buns are already pretty well bonded, I dont see there being problems with them bonding so I am already planning how to alter their habitat so it is big enough for two! Barney is a dinky little thing, Belle is getting rather large!

So here is what Barney has currently, Belle is in a plastic indoor cage as she cant live with Barney and she isn’t litter trained (ARGH) so she cant go on wood or carpet

The thing is about this hutch is that the top level is sloped towards the back as it was supposed to have a roof on it, therefore ensuring that rain would run off the roof. I am actually completely considering buying another one of this exact same hutch, as it is all in pieces I can put it together how I want.

So here is my plan (maybe) – to buy another one, and instead of assembling it in the recommended order I want to flip the top section of the new hutch so that it fits like a jigsaw with the top section of this one, as both top sections of both hutches are slanted so I need to rectify that. Does that make sense? Then the bottom section of the new one will go on top, again with no roof and I will put the little picket fence back on. Thus making a huge 4 storey hutch.

I would love to build them something else, but the ONLY space I have to work with is upwards unfortunately now that I’m at uni! Any help/advice would be appreciated, I have no idea if this will even make sense to anyone I’ll attach a pic of the store bought one so you can see what I mean about them being sloped

Thanks! Anna, Barney & Belle xxx

I can’t offer any advice as I am looking for new housing as well. Do you have a link for where you bought this? Been looking for a nice indoor hutch and this looks great!

Makes perfect sense to me. Sounds like it will work well and be very attractive. You might need to do a little modification on the upside down one… like on the slanted roof (to be the new floor) may need something on it to help get traction and prevent sliding, maybe like indoor/outdoor carpeting that you can pull out and wash if needed. You’d need to cut a door in the floor/roof for ramp access, the only thing I see that might be problematic is when you flip that second one, the back end will be facing you.

Hmmm… What if you measured out the height difference from the front end of the roof-line, to the back end, then cut (or get someone to cut) a piece of lumber to use as a support on the back end, and then you could just stack on on top of the other, instead of the top one being upside down. Then they’d both be facing front like the one you have now, and no added traction or anything would be needed. Would only need to cut access holes in the floor/roof.. and probably box that in, so they can’t try to squeeze between the two units. Are you handy with tools or know someone who is? I see a few different ways to modify them, but pretty much needs someone with at least a little bit of carpentry skills.

You could always get some NIC cube grids for the upper-stories! That would still look neat and be pain free. LOL

Thanks for the reply, I am SO unhandy with tools it’s actually hilarious – the first hutch said 45 minutes build time … it took me 3 hours. Haha! It only slants by like an inch, hmm! Well the floors for each level are removable, so theoretically I could swap them and then I wouldn’t have to cut any holes anywhere! That would be perfect I guess if this plan goes ahead I’ll have to get rid of the second roof, as I still have the 1st roof stored under my bed and I’m not sure there’s room for a second! x

Brainwave! In the picture above, there are 4 feet on the hutch. I will saw the front two feet off, and saw the back 2 feet in half which will give me the inch of wood i need to make it all level!! Wahoo! x
