        Hi

I noticed this morning that Rufus, my baby rabbit, has a white milky looking bit in the back corner of his eye (the corner nearer his ear) and little gunky bits in the other corner. I wiped the gunky eye stuff off with saline on cotton wool and my mum suggested getting some antibiotic eyedrops as that’s what we used to do with our dogs.

He’s fine in himself and still eating/doing everything else normally. Any idea what’s causing it and is eye drops the right thing to do?

        Thanks

Don’t use the eyedrops! If you don’t know what is causing it, you don’t know how to treat it and drops for dogs may contain something not good for rabbits. Saline drops are ok, for now, but definitely have a vet look at it before it gets worse or spreads to the other eye.

We actually used to use human eye drops as the vet suggested since you can get them cheaper from the chemist haha.

But OK, I’ll wipe it down every so often and if it looks bad tomorrow I’ll call the vet. I have 2 other bunnies so I don’t want them to catch it if it’s contagious.

Some eye drops for humans can work for dogs because they have a larger body mass, but may be too strong for buns or contain steroids. Good luck!

Ah ok. I’ve always had dogs and am new to all this rabbit stuff so I hope I’m not coming across like a moron D: Cheers for the advice!

Sounds like something is irritating the eye. I would have a vet look to make sure it isn’t scratched or something.

Sounds weird but with my old bunny, we used to hold a cold, used tea bag on the eye if it looked milky or inflamed. It did work! But of course, a trip to the vet would be 100x better! x
