        Hello,

My Dutch rabbit has some black-coloured nails! I haven’t trimmed the black nails as I’m wary of hitting a vessel by accident, as I cannot see the red line where the vein would run. Any tips as to how to clip, or should I simply take her to the vet?

I’ve found this information helpful: The press press clip method

If you still feel uncomfortable, this page might make you happy: Taking bun to a vet

If the nail has a little sharp hook-like point on the end, you might feel ok with trimming just that part off.  Good luck!

My previous bunny had white nails and short normal fur on his paws and clipping was a breeze. Porky otoh, has black nails and thick dense furry feet (almost like a snowshoe hare.) I don’t get the nails nearly as short, and we’ve had a few mishaps resulting in bleeding bunny.

Go slow, and make sure you have powder to stop bleeding within easy reach. I was so used to never having toactually use it, that when I needed it I had to yell to my husband b/c I couldn’t reach it while holding a panicked bleeding bunny.

Absolutely the “press/clip” method for dark nails!

I usually do a serious of clips, taking of the tip then moving gradually back further. When I press and the bunny reacts is where I stop.

Mine are uncomfortable with nail clipping, so they are jerking away the whole time trying to get their paws back and the press clip doesn’t help me much… can never tell if they just hate a clip or it hurts that way. Stickers has white nails I can see the quick on, but Powder has kind of a dark cream color to his nails and unless I am shining a light right on them, I can’t see it.

What I do is just trim the nail a small amount more frequently than the white nails, that way I avoid clipping the quick. They don’t go as short as white nailed creatures, but I have never caused a bleed.
