My bunny Charlie is free range (when we’re home), but had a little alteration with one of our dogs about 4 months ago. She loooooves puppy food with a passion and despite our efforts to keep her from it, she still sneaks in little nibbles here and there (even though she KNOWS we are just going to dig it out of her chunky little mouth). Our dogs are both really sweet with her and have no problem with her theft of their food. However, one night all those months ago “something” happened. I was getting ready for bed and only saw the tailend of it, but it seemed like Charlie and Edwin our dog were sharing a meal and something spooked both of them.Edwin freaked out and jumped away. In the process Charlie hit her head on the underside of the food bowl.

She was really strange afterwards and my husband and I were both really worried. She was just sitting still, leaning her head to side, and seeming very disoriented. Her left eye was also watering very badly and I was afraid she might have scratched it. We immediately looked up a 24 hour emergency clinic (since it all happened around 1 in the morning) and took her to see the vet. By the time we took the 30 min drive and waited to be treated Charlie was acting just fine- hopping around the room and being perfectly nosey, The vet checked her out and said she probably had just experienced some slight head trauma and was fine now. She told us to just keep an eye on her for the next 24 hours. I cannot for the life of me remember if we expressed out concerns about Charlie’s eye or not. It was a really emotional night and I was just happy she was acting normal again.

She was her old self again from then on out. She never showed any signs that her eye was bothering her (although I know that buns are pretty skilled at hiding pain). So today, about four months later, I noticed a huge brown streak across her eye. It doesn;t touch the cornea, but it does go slightley across the front of her iris (as in it goes through the black rim before you can even see the brown of her iris)and I could only partially see it when she was giving me a wide-eyed look and then fully when I pulled lightly on her eyelid.

So my mind immediately goes back to that night four months ago. Surely she actually did scratch her eye. So the QUESTION: Do I take her to get treatment or no? It’s been four or so months so I’m not really sure there is anything they can do. I’m hoping she doesn’t have eyesight damage since it doesn’t even touch her iris, but my main concern is making sure that she isn’t in any pain from the old injury? I figure that it’s probably healed (as much as it’s going to be) and there isn’t anything that can be done at this point. She has no problem with me taking a look and as I said, has been her happy old self. What do you think?

A similar incident happened to my rabbit before I got him, his mom scratched him in his eye so now he has that same brown spot on his eye like you described yours had.
Is it like pussing white near his eyelid? As this is what my bunny has all the time even with medicine it will get better but it never actually goes away completely. His former owners took him to they vet and they got him Termaycin, you can purchase this from amazon for $5 or just take him back to the vet and tell them his eye got scratched and youre worried. They should give you a tube of termaycin. The vet said he’d probably be permanent blind in that eye, so chances are your bunny may be too but I don’t think there’s a way of really knowing unless you take him to the vet

I suggest you get his eye checked out. Eye injuries can be serious and you have no way to be certain if it’s an old injury or something new.

What you are describing doesn’t sound like a scratched eye to me. Scratches are typically just the cornea, but you’re talking about the iris and stuff. What I’m trying to say is that if the scratch was so bad to make it through the cornea to other parts of the eye, her eye would be looking pretty bad (blood, etc). So it could be something completely unrelated. I would definitely have a vet take a look at it.
