So I am going to change Coco’s cage around because he insists on tearing the newspaper from the bottom far part of the cage up in the middle of the night and waking me up. I was thinking of putting a towel there to replace the newspaper then either putting newspaper ontop or underneath the towel. I’ve tried to make the newspaper shorter by rolling it behind its self so he can’t get a hold of it but he figured it out and started pulling on it. There’s food (pellets and a carrot or two) along with hay in his cage, a litter box and a water bowl. The top shelf where I keep the hay and water he doesn’t bother, just the bottom where I can’t get to easily to fix it. I also have two toys in his cage but he doesn’t seem to bother them ;/
I was wondering if you guys had any other ideas?

Hi Trishh, are you sure you really need the newspaper there? Only I’m thinking that if he really wants to tear up the newspaper up, and he’s already snuck his way past your barrier once, he’s probably just going to do it again, even if you move it?

Well it’s there because the cage is wire and I didn’t want it hurting his feet. I’m not sure what to do as if I put a towel down I’m sure he’d dig that up but at least it would be quieter than ripping newspaper

Can you get a cut piece of linoleum to cover the wire?Or remove the wire flooring altogether? Newspaper or towels isn’t a long term solution. Are you planning on getting different housing soon?

I probably could get a piece of linoleum and put it down. His cage is just temporary housing until I can get an x pen or make him a new cage using c&c cubes, I made another post about that. I can see if my dad has a small piece of wood or if he can cut a piece that’s thin and put it In the cage the get a small piece of rug and put it on top, would that work? And should I put something in between the wood and carpet? I’m going shopping later so ill stop by the pet store and see what I can find

A cut piece of wood would work fine, but if he isn’t 100% pee litter trained, the wood won’t be able to be fully cleaned. BUT… if it’s just temporary, that should be fine!

He doesn’t pee anywhere in his cage but his litter box it’s just if he’s outside of his cage in my room he’ll pee right near his cage which is why im hesitant to set up a xpen and remove his cage all together.
I went to petco and got him a peters grass mat that I’m going to put down to replace the newspaper
