My five month old bunny, Truffle, passed away a little less than two hours ago. He was fine yesterday, but today, around 8:00 PM, I noticed he lost control of his front limbs and showed signs of labored breathing. He passed away less than twenty minutes later, way before I could get him to an animal hospital. I’m assuming he had a genetic abnormality that caused his death, but I wanted to make sure this didn’t sound like any sort of contagious disease, because I have another bunny (in separate cages, separate rooms), that I intended to introduce to him after they were both neutered. I’m somewhat in shock. He was scheduled to be neutered in two weeks and I have no idea what happened. He was just the sweetest, friendliest little guy.

I just wanted to know if anyone had any ideas of what might have happened.

I’m so sorry for your loss, it is never easy loosing a furrbaby whatever the age.

Could he have had a respiratory infection? It is common for Rabbits to get irritated lungs as they are so small and delicate. That would explain the difficulty breathing. By loose control of his front legs do you mean he couldn’t move them or were they moving crazily? It could be that somehow his nervous system was infected as well, if the nerves in his legs were damaged that would explain that too.

Unfortunately I am not a vet, so I wouldn’t know, especially since I have never handled him.

Don’t blame yourself for not seeing something was wrong before, rabbits are experts at hiding Illness

I’m really, really sorry. This is so sad.

Like Muffin said, rabbits hide illness. We can hypothesize, but we’re not going to know for sure. If you want to truly get more info, a vet can do a necropsy, but even those results may be inconclusive.

You’re correct that it may have been a genetic condition that wouldn’t be known to anyone.

In the end, what matters is that he was very, very loved. I am so sorry for your loss…

I am so sorry for your loss. Like everyone said, it may be impossible to know exactly what happened. Buns are so fragile and hide illnesses well and unless you got him from a breeder his genetic history is unkown. I’m sure many long-time bunny people on this site have experienced similar situations and it is important not to blame yourself. In my twenty years of bunny loving I had a two year old rabbit that was perfectly healthy and when I returned from a trip to the bathroom he had suddenly passed away. That fast and with no symptoms. I also had a baby dwarf that I found dead in his cage only a week after I bought him.

I would call your vet just to see if he or she has any insight. To be safe I would also bleach his environment (cage, dishes, toys etc) and throw away anything that may be contaminated. it sounds like a genetic issue to me, but I am not a vet and never saw the bun so it is best to stay safe.
