This morning, Nellie was fine. She ran to see me, she came out of her cage and binky-ed and ran for about an hour, then she headed back to her cage. She ate some hay and some pellets and drank, pooped and peed, then when upstairs to her bedroom and has been just laying there since, and it’s been about 4 or 5 hours now. She’s just not been herself since. Is she just tired? I’m really worried.

Most bunnies are crazy active in the morning, are super lazy for most of the day and then insanely hyper before bed. As long as she’s eating, drinking, pooping, peeing and binky-ing, sounds like she’s just comfortable!

Yup – sounds like totally normal bunny behavior. My buns sleep from about 9:30/10:00 am to 4:00/5:00 pm.

I was feeling better, but Nellie is just not herself today. Her ears have gotten cold now, and they were hot earlier. Does that mean anything?

Their ears get warm when they are warm. If she was running around playing, her ears may have warmed up.

                  How is Nellie doing?

How is she today? Bunnies sleep during the day, so the majority are up and running around in the morning, and then sleep for the entire day (mine sleep about 8-10 hours in the middle of the day).

They use their ears to regulate their body temperature, so hot ears just mean they are warm and trying to cool off, so the blood vessels in the ears expand and let off heat. When their ears are cold, it means their body temp is good and they are not trying to let off heat, so the blood vessels get smaller.

If it’s something she’s never done before -i.e. she always tears around like crazy for four hours, then that’s a concern. If however you haven’t had her out at that time of day and/or for that long, then certainly it could be very normal.
Things to watch for besides the obvious are appetite and poop and pee. If those are normal you can observe and wait.

                      How are things now?

Things are just fine now. I am thinking that she is just now settling into her new home. (I have only had her for a month.) She runs like crazy for an hour a day, and then the rest is spent lounging around, doing the bunny flops, playing with toys (which she’s never done before) and being super cuddly. She eats and drinks and pees/poops fine. I even took her to the vet for a checkup, and she said she was doing perfect.
