I finally moved Elvis out of his cramped condo and into a 4×4 xpen. I love it! He’s got a lot more room and its sooo much easier to clean. BUT Elvis lived in that condo for about 7 years so the sudden change has him stressed out a bit, which is totally expected. The problem I’m having though is that he’s not eating his pellets (he hasn’t for the past 3 nights). It’s the same pellets he’s been eating for years and he’s eating his veggies and hay just fine. I bought a new bowl for him (a stainless steel cat saucer) and I put his pellets in it the first night. He didn’t touch them so I put his old feeder in the pen and he still didn’t eat any. Now I have both feeders in his pen, both with pellets in it and in different locations hoping he’ll choose to eat out of one. I’m quite sure it’s the stress that causing this, otherwise he’s a perfectly healthy bun.

Has anyone had this problem? Should I be concerned? Should I just give him more time to adjust? Any thoughts/suggestions are greatly appreciated!!! I leave for college in 4 days so I’m hoping to get this resolved.

        Thanks!

(here’s a link to the pic of his xpen, I’m having trouble loading it directly onto the site: http://i39.tinypic.com/ffabr8.jpg&#160

Did you take the condo down already? Can you zip tie some grids together to make a hidey house (maybe 1×2 grids)? It might give him that “condo feel” without the condo. If the xpen is just an open square right now, he might be missing the closed in feel.

His condo was very small so I’m sure he is missing that feeling but he does have two hidey boxes in the xpen…

Last night I put one of the food dishes inside one of his hidey boxes to see if that would make him more comfortable eating but he just dumped the pellets out.  I caught him eating a tiny bit out of his original feeder before I went to bed so maybe he’s slowly feeling more comfortable…?

Is the pen in the same space that the condo was?

If he’s eating hay and veggies, and drinking water, just give him time. As long as you know he’s taking in something, he’ll be fine.

If the pellet eating doesn’t resume this week, you may want to consider a vet visit. Pellets are the first thing to go when a dental problem arises. If that’s the case, it may just be coincidental that it occurred at the same time his housing was upgraded.

Thanks Beka27. I feel a little more comfortable now, especially since he ate some last night, but I’ll keep an eye on him just in case
And yup! The pen is in the exact same spot as the condo.

Yeah, I’m sure he’ll be just fine. Remember, he lived in that condo for 7 years!!! That’s like you living in a house for 50 years and suddenly moving! He’ll come around… :o)

Can you attach his old condo to his new pen, or put it inside his new pen?

To encourage my buns to enter their new condo – I placed their veggie bowl in the condo. Instead of going in to the condo on the 1st day – they pulled veggies through the NIC grids to eat! I posted a pic – cause I thought it was so cute. In a few days – they were both exploring levels 2 and 3 of their condo.
