Remi is my first house rabbit so I’m learning a lot about general rabbit care. He is shedding A TON now. Are their big sheds typically seasonal? Once or twice a year? Or does it vary with each bun? Thankfully he sits nicely on my lap while I groom him but I still find little tumbleweeds of fur in his pen each morning.

Bunnies vary in their shedding patterns. Most buns molt (big shed) a couple of times a year. My buns tend to molt in Spring and Late Fall. This is not written in stone, though. Then they have smaller sheds throughout the year as well.

Your lucky to have a bun who is so calm for grooming. My buns act like the world is coming to an end at grooming time!

Make sure to groom every day during a molt and keep his pen clean of fur that may get ingested. My best trick for molting is the “wet hands” grooming method. Wet your hands and run along bunnies fur until no more fur comes off. You can rub your hands together to remove the fur and repeat. This gets off all the loose fur that bunny would be ingesting while grooming.

It really varies a lot by bunny. Most will blow their coat twice a year, and then have two smaller sheds, generally correlating with the seasons. Mine do tend to shed on a schedule, but the schedule doesn’t exactly correlate with seasons – they tend to shed around December and July. One of mine does shed 4 times a year, the other only noticeably sheds once a year.

How do you tell if its a shed or a molt? Is a molt much more severe?

I always thought they were the same thing… Just semantics… I could, of course, be wrong.

Rupert has definitely started his molting-so they definitely vary when they go through it. A molt is just kind of a big shed, and shedding is usually a term we use when the are just doing a little normal everyday shed, molting is typically what we call the twice a year crazy shedding-the kind where there is fur EVERYWHERE
