So yesterday I cleaned out Beans’ cage and I decided to move some things around to give him more space to run around and play in when he’s in there. He has a rectangular litter box, and I had only rotated it, so it’s still in the same corner. He’s also grown quite a bit, so much so that I noticed that he was jumping up on to his elevated platform instead of using the ramp, so I removed the ramp to give him more space. I also rotated his little hidey box (still in the same corner, just rotated 90 degrees). Later on in the day, I noticed he had peed just outside of his litter box, which is very unusual as he has ALWAYS used his litter box to pee in! I figured he had just gotten a little confused about the changes I made in his cage so I rotated his litter box to be in the same place it was before, but still left his platform rampless. Then today, I found he had done the same thing! Just on the other side of the litter box. I’ve since put back his ramp and rotated his hidey box back to where it was.

I did a quick google search about this and some people are suggesting it may be a urinary tract problem.. So my question is, is he just confused about his changed environment or is it possible there’s something more serious going on? Also, I clean out his litter box twice a day, and it is big enough to fit two of him, so I don’t think it’s a problem with his litter box being too small or too dirty. It’s also worth mentioning that Beans is 11 weeks old, and not yet neutered.. So maybe it’s just a territorial marking thing? It just seems so strange because he’s always been so good about using his litter box.. Please help!

It’s most likely NOT a UTI – it’s most likely a combination of the change in his environment and he is probably getting more hormonal at his age and going through puberty.

Thank you for your reply Sarita! Beans is now back to using his litter box successfully
