Hi – I wasn’t sure if this fit into another category, but I was wondering how often people had guests over at their home? Or any tips on having guests over…

I brought Simba home last weekend and he has started settling into his new home but still gets startled by new noises and such. My friends are excited to meet him and some relatives have come over to see him. I tell them that Simba’s still nervous in a new home so to be gentle and nothing sudden, but I wanted to see from other bunny owners that having guests over isn’t too big of a stress for the bunny? So far, Simba has gotten comfortable with the presence of me and my husband (who he knows are feeding, playing and doing poopy duty cleaning up his space).

Well my bunny seems to do okay whenever I have people over. She spends the first 10 minutes or so hiding under the couch but then she gets curious and comes to see what we are up to. As she’s gotten more comfortable with living here and with each positive experience she’s been quicker to open up to strangers too. Just give her her space and let her socialize if she wants to but don’t force it.

My rabbit Bobby is basically okay with guests but he mainly stays away when guests come. Bobby generally stays upstairs though and if he wants to come down, he can. I wouldn’t turn guests away though because Simba is scared…just give him a place to stay out of the way when guests come.

I started actively getting Bromley used to people coming over after about a week in my home. My house is always where everybody meets up so it was important for him to feel safe in that environment. My friends (not all at once) would sit next to his cage and talk to him. If he came over to the bars, we would open his door. If he stretched out to sniff, they would give him a treat. If he didn’t run away with the treat, he would get a pet. It didn’t take long before he would run up to the bars as soon as my front door opened and someone would walk in. At that point I started holding him if we were gathered at my table talking or put him on the couch with us if we were watching a movie. Two weeks after I had him, I had my annual Easter egg decorating party and that was the first time I had a more than just one or two guests over. But he had met most of my friends during the prior week and demanded to join the party too! I had to take him out of his cage and hold him in the kitchen where everyone was gathered and a couple of times he climbed off of my lap and into one of my friends’.

Rabbits are a prey species so strange humans will freak them out a bit to start with. I get my friends to ignore my two and eventually Suri will come over and nudge them for some attention buttons is much more shy so wont really come over to see anyone except me my mum and my sister. i guess it depends on your bunnies personality but this has worked pretty well for me.

Great, thanks for all the feedback! I’ll monitor a bit when guests come but everyone’s input really helped!
