Hi all! My Flemish Giant Jo-Jo will be 4 months old Aug 1st and is growing like a weed! She’s about 10 lbs and big as a cat. She is fed unlimited hay and pellets, plus greens morning and evening and bits of fruit/ carrot for an afternoon snack. She is a big eater though she doesn’t devour anything but eats at a relaxed pace. She is growing so fast that though she in no way feels “skinny”, you can tell that all her body’s energy is being used to grow muscle and bone rather than pile on fat. My question is, once she enters puberty, how long do we wait to spay her so that those beneficial hormones that help strengthen muscle & bone have enough time to help growth vs. making her crazy? Is 5 months, 6 months best or longer? I know Flemmies are a little different than smaller breeds… Any opinions?

Well, I’ve heard 6 months – I don’t think it would hurt to wait at least 6 months.

I think 6 months would be fine. That’s the “standard” for when females are spayed. Her “frame” should be pretty much set by then, but she’ll likely continue to “fill out” well into her second year.

Thanks! I’ll hold off til 6 months, barring any negative hormone related behavior.
(Cranky I can handle, but if there’s spraying or inappropriate peeing, we may have to do it sooner)
              Thanks for the advice.

From what I’ve heard 6 months is recommended for females in part because the estrogen helps with bone development.
