I would like your guys opinion on the best soft bedding for a rabbits litter box. If you have seen my previous posts you will know that both my bunnies are on antibiotics for sore hocks. I was using woodstove pellets in their litterboxes but that isn’t very soft so I ran out and boughtan off brand of carefresh (which I am using now) and I just picked up a bag of carefresh from a pet store 2 days ago. The care fresh is very soft, but it costs a lot (compared to woodstove pellets) and it leaves a mess everywhere. I also don’t like the smell AT ALL! Woodstove pellets are AMAZING with odor control!

Also, does anyone know how to get a rabbit to stop digging in a litter box if they can’t have a litter screen? Mocha is driving me crazy!

Continue using wsp, but can you just sprinkle a light layer of carefresh over the top?

Yeah, I would suggest layering the litter too.

I agree with layering. I used Carefresh for my gerbils a while back and wans’t really a fan. I think using Carefresh over the WSP, or even just hay of the WSP, would work.

What is the rest of their enclosure like? If they’re anything like my bunnies, they probably don’t spend a whole lot of time in their litter boxes, so it might help more to change the flooring in the rest of their pen.

I was doing WPS under the carefresh but mocha digs, so it is all going to be mixed around. I could try it again.

Elrohwen: My cage has had tons of layers of fleece, towels, sheets, and memory foam pads for about 6 Months now. I have upped that since I found out how bad they were. Does anyone have any other types of flooring that may be easier?

Soft surfaces can sometimes be worse because of the friction against their feet. Ideally, they should have a variety of surfaces, some soft, some solid.

I wouldn’t worry about the carefresh getting mixed in. The wsp are going to disintegrate anyways.

@beka: The vet told me to keep her off of hard surfaces. Would diferenct types of soft surfaces be ok? like maybe getting puzzle mats?

What about covering the WSP with hay? One of my rabbits has sore hock issues and covering it with hay seems to soften it up quite a bit.

My hay is very thick and stalky because that’s all my rabbits eat. :p I’ll try the wood stove pellets and carefresh. Thx. Any other tips would be wonderful!

Possibly! The rubber mats might work too!

Ok, I might pick some up. People from the WHRS say that synthetic sheepskin is good too! I am going to purchase some.
