Hi everyone, just a quick question about what is the best way to keep my bunnies bowls and litter trays clean?
Does vinegar kill the harmful bacteria?
Will they still eat from a bowl if its sprayed with 125ml vinegar, 375ml water?
        What do you use?

        Many thanks
        Hannah x

For the most part, I clean my buns’ things with water/vinegar. I do a heavy clean of their litter box with a mix of Mrs. Meyer’s All Purpose Cleaner, Vinegar, and Water. As for cleaning their bowls, I use Mrs. Meyer’s Dish Soap. Any dish soap should work. As long you rinse with water really well everything should be okay. =] I like to make sure things are extremely clean. I have issues with bacteria/germs. So I try to use the “friendliest” cleaners out there that don’t have extra chemicals and junk in it. As long as you clean with piping hot water, no matter what you clean with the buns’ things should be clean.

I wouldn’t spray their bowls with vinegar, instead I rinse my pellet bowl and water dish daily. Occasionally, I’ll rinse the bowl with a pinch of dish washing soup. Then I make sure I rinse them off really well. I would request that you set the water dish far from his litter box so that hay pieces and dust wouldn’t get into the water. I only have the pellet dish in his pen when it is pellet time. Yes, vinegar will kill harmful bacteria. Vinegar is known to be great as a cleaner. Don’t worry, the smell only last for 5-10 mins. But if you do not prefer vinegar because of the rather unpleasant smell, you can buy a rabbit safe cleaner from the pet store.

I wash the food bowls the same way I wash all the animal food bowls, and essentially the same way I wash my own dishes, by hand, with dish detergent. I make sure they are well rinsed but then I feel very strongly that no one, myself included wants to taste soap in their food.

Vinegar is good to help scrub out the litter box, one member is experimenting enthusiastically using Hydrigin Peroxide, I tend to use a multi surface cleanser. I think the big thing is that again, whatever is used is thoroughly washed away and if vinegar works for you its fine!

I used plain water, dish soap, vinegar, baking soda, Nature’s Miracle, and/or Petastic. Depends how deep the stain is and what it is I’m cleaning.

For litter, I’ve gone to using liner bags since there’s a grocerry plastic bag ban now (used to dump the litter into the grocerry bags).

I’m using pet cleaner (for rabbits and guinea pigs) ATM and I’m spending a lot of money on it so wandered if vinegar would do the same thing, I wash the food and water bottles with dish cleaner and rinse well. I use water bottles ATM as they get on we’ll with them and Suri is messy with them. Thanks for your quick replies everyone

I, as well, use vinegar/H2O 50/50%, and Mrs. Meyers cleaner in the litter box… depends how deeply I’m scrubbing her corner out that day. For her water bowl and pellet dish, I wash the same way I wash all of our dishes and then rinse very well. If Bun occasionally “tinkles” outside of her litter box (this has occurred either bcz she kicked some litter out of the box and decided ,hey, I can go there! Or, “Gee, that’s a nice pile of hay in that corner… ?” I then clean with the vinegar/H2O to clean and remove the scent from the spot. Weirdly enough, after cleaning a straw mat this way, Bun began licking the mat for days…. guess she likes a slight vinegar taste…

Vinegar does have good effects on cleaning dishes and kill harmful bacteria. You can clean the dishes or bowls with dish detergent and a dish scrubber. Then soak the dishes with vinegar for a few munites. After that, you should remember to pour out the vinegar and thoroughly wash the dishes with clean water again!
