Ok so im getting a bunny soon and i want to be prepared. i have heard about them going threw 2 heavy sheds and 2 light sheds. i was just wondering if anyone knows really great brushes or combs that really works and does it just have to be a rabbit brush/comb or can it be a cat brush/comb??

also what do you guys do or what is your routine for when your bunnies shed??

Hairbuster! (if you can find one)

I only brush my two when it gets really bad which would be during the heavy sheds. They normally fight enough to naturally have the fur fly away without my interference. With my NewBun, I’ve brushed him more but it doesn’t remove any fur. The brushings is because his fur is longer so I’m just brushing out the tangles.

The amount of shedding really depends on the buns. I have three buns and my girl, Skipper, sheds constantly while my boys, Ian and Hugo, shed very rarely. I noticed that different brushes work for different types of hair. The Furminator works pretty well. The brush that I found to work the best for my buns is a cat curry brush. It looks like this:

I feel like this brush picks up more hair. The Furminator works on taking the fur out of the undercoat of the bun. Which works well on buns with thicker coats.

I brush my buns as often as can be. It helps them from creating fur blockages that can lead to a G.I. Stasis.

I use the Furminator on Olivia who has short fur and a slicker brush on Bindi who has very thick, long fur. For both, though, I get the most fur off with the “wet hands” method.

I groom my buns every day with a day off every once in a while when they are really not losing fur.

It may be cheaper to get the brush that you decide to go with off of Amazon. I know you can get the Furminator from a local pet store.

How do you get fur off your hands with the wet hands method? I find that I’m clogging my drain with fur! The other day, I pulled out a giant fur ball from the drain… ugh.

I keep a little bowl of water and a little plastic container beside my grooming area. After you smooth your wet hands over the bunny, rub them together and the fur will clump into long strands. I then dump the strands in the container and put them in the garbage when I’m done.

I also use the Hairbuster comb. When my lop was with us, I would pull so much fur off of him with that, I could build a second bunny. Now that it’s just our mini rex… I get a little bit off of her, but she doesn’t shed a whole lot. The wet hands method works better with her type of fur.

I have tried a bunch and my favorites are the Hair Buster comb, and the Furminator. Make sure you get the pink furminator made especially for small animals – it works far better than the blue one for cats, and doesn’t seem to bother the bunnies as much.
