I have officially given up trying to trim my rabbits nails.  She’s the sweetest little thing until she sees those clippers… then she starts lunging, grunting, nipping – the works.  She just turns into an actual terror.  I have managed to successfully clip them once – it took 2 weeks and neither of us have fully recovered.  I’d prefer to not hate my bunny and her not to hate me so… yeah… paying someone else to do it.

So question – is it okay to take her to a regular dog and cat kind of vet to get her nails done?  I do have a rabbit vet but it’s a bit far while there is a normal vet within walking distance of my apartment.  So are all nail trimmings pretty much created equal?  Can I trust a dog vet with this or should I waste a Saturday hauling her to the good vet?

I think so as long as they are willing – I see no harm in this at all.

I would also think that would be fine. Sometimes just taking a rabbit out of their comfort zone (to the hospital vet) helps to stress them enough so the job can get done.

Just be careful with how they handle her. Sometimes non-rabbit vets have employees that handle them roughly and you don’t want that. As long as they handle her correctly, they don’t need much expertise to clip her nails.

When I take mine to the vet to get their nails clipped – the nurse lets me stay with the buns, and while they’re on the table, I comfort them while she clips.

In my experience, it’s easier to see the quick on most bunnies’ nails than in the nails of darker dog breeds. My black lab mix’s nails were almost entirely black. Like was said before, as long as they handle your bun properly it’s the same concept.

                    Update

So I took her to get her nails cut today at the vet near my apartment. It’s just at the end of the block so really really close which is nice since bus and subway rides obviously make her stressed. It took all of 2 minutes and aside from the small bit of fur that was sacrificed along with the nails I didn’t feel the vet was inadequate in regards to bunnies. Oh, and it cost me all of 1 dollar. That’s right, that wasn’t a typo, one dollar. Twelve dollars a year for nail clipping. So basically a win all around. Why did I ever think doing her nails at home would be a good idea? I wasted 5 months worth of bunny manicures buying my now useless nail clippers…

One dollar – now that’s a good deal – I don’t know of ANYTHING you can get for a dollar nowadays :~)

That’s a crazy deal! I’m glad they were able to do that for you! Did you schedule your next 11 appointments? LOL!

Lol I know! I was so surprised I made her repeat the price like 4 times because I was sure I was misunderstanding her! I can’t even get my morning coffee for a dollar…

I’m new with my bunny so I’m not comfortable trying to do it on my own and have the same issue. I don’t have any rabbit specific vets in my area but there is a local vet that does say they look at rabbits so I’m thinking to bring Simba there to trim his nails. I’m just curious, did you screen the vet or ask them any particular questions before bringing your bun there or you just walked in and asked to have its nails trimmed?

                              Thanks!
