Hi everyone! I am a new bunny owner and I have come across an odour eliminating litter spray at my local Pet Barn, and I am wondering whether these sprays can be harmful to rabbits’ health? If it makes any difference, the particular spray I was looking at is by the brand Hartz, and is called ‘Nodor Small Animal Bedding Spray’. I can’t find any reviews of the product, and I am hoping someone can shed some light on my query! Any help would be much appreciated

I can’t think why you would need this. If you have a good litter and clean frequently you don’t need this.

Ditto Sarita… My current foster had stinky boy bun cecals until he was recently neutered and even then the daily litter tray and area clean got rid of the smell.

Thanks for your replies reason why I asked is because my bun is still living with his mama and will be ready to be collected to take home on Saturday and my mum is concerned about the smell it might have. Thanks again!

Those products are meant to be used in cat litter boxes. If you actually lean down and sniff my box when it is time to change it it smells of urine, but then how could it not. However, as I said you literally have to smell the box, and that’s with two rabbits using it. I really wouldn’t worry, … I have a very sensitive sense of smell, and none of my rabbits have ever smelt unpleasant, … either the rabbits themselves or their living space. Hope this helps your mother feel better.

Important though, don’t use scented litter since that puts some rabbits off. An unscented litter like Yesterday’s News works very well. While not a substitute for the litter a layer of hay in the box encourages good litter habits and (I find anyway) does absorb any excess odour. Although if your rabbit is so young that it is still with its mother then it will probably be a little while before you can litter train it.

Good luck and I hope everything goes smoothly. Look forward to hearing about your new family member!

As long as you change the litter daily, and use a good absorbent material (wood pellets are an excellent, economical choice), odor shouldn’t be a problem. If you want to make sure the litterbox is extra clean, just plain vinegar works great and is safe. It breaks down urine odors and stains, rinses easily, and doesn’t leave any kind of toxic residues behind.

Thanks everyone you’ve all been very helpful! And thank you Grey Dove, I can feel I’m going to be a very paranoid bunny mother, so I’m sure I’ll be on these forums quite a bit! Haha

Did you start a second account?

The best way to reduce odor is to get a good safe litter and clean frequently. Boy bunnies can be especially stinky when they hit puberty so I would also look into neutering. It can be done at about 3 months for most boy bunnies.

Ok!  Thanks for clearing that up!  If you’re good with the “shaziaaa” account, I can have Binkybunny delete the “shaz” account so there is no confusion.

Odor isn’t typically an issue if the litterbox is cleaned frequently.  Unneutered rabbits can give off a stinky smell, but this goes away with neutering.  If potty habits are your mother’s biggest concern, make sure she knows that your new rabbit will have to be spay/neutered.

MoveDiagonally: Thanks for the information! My bun is 9 weeks old now, so I’ll schedule a neuter for him in another 3 weeks.
Beka27: That would be great if you could get my other account deleted and thanks, I’ll let mum know neutering is the way to go to tackle the smell

I have a very keen sense of smell and can smell both poo and pee in a completely fresh litter box. I’ve found that wood pellet litter that turns into saw dust and pellet litter with baking soda to be better for me since they cover up the smell a little but then it’ll smell like sawdust and baking soda. At least that’s more pleasant smelling though.
