Shamus has a bit of a tummy ache and I want to give him some simithecone but because he has a sore stomach he wont eat anything or take it how can I persuade him to take it?

        Thanks

Kneel on the floor with him between your knees, and get the dropper of simethicone into the side of his mouth, behind his teeth. He can’t not take it if you make him take it

It’s quite normal for them to hate simethicone. I make a bunny-burrito with a towel and hold bunny in my lap. I use a syringe and stick it into the side of the mouth then push gently so I see he’s taking it, there is a risk they could choke, so never ever put bunny on it’s back for force-feeding.

            My bunnies hate this treatment.

              Are you using infacol Floppybuns?

Will Shamus let you give his tummy a bit of a massage?

I give simethicone to my buns by squirting it onto fresh papaya. I’ll poke little holes into the papaya so that the simethicone will seep into it and not slide off. If they refuse to eat the papaya I use the same method as bam. I totally second Jersey. If you can give your bun a tummy rub it will help ease some of his discomfort.

Both of my bunnies were sneezing, so the vet prescribed an antibiotic. Benedict loved it–he’d happily take it out of the syringe–but Oliver refused.

I ended up mixing it up in a tiny bit of mashed banana. He ate it right up! You can also use natural unflavored apple sauce, but Oliver decided he didn’t like that. If you go the banana route try to use as little as possible, since it’s so sweet. They can only have about a teaspoon per day for every 2 pounds of body weight.

You can definitely try mixing it into tastier things – I personally use pumpkin but it really depends on what your bunny goes nuts for.

If you can’t get him to eat that way though – you’re going to have to be the big mean momma and just get it in there. As mean as you feel, just remember he will be much happier and it’s your job as bunny parent to make sure he’s taking his meds even if he doesn’t want to! I swear they are such little kids sometimes!

MB has a great technique to try!

I sit my bunnies on a towel on the kitchen table to give all meds.

Well you don’t want to give simethicone with fruit or sugary treats – that makes no sense since that is most likely what causes an upset gi tract.

I guess my question to you is what do you think is upsetting his stomach and why do you think he has an upset stomach…

Oh holy cow. It’s HARD to get them to take simethicone. Fermata hasn’t needed it, but I’ve had to force it down Femto twice. When he was younger he had a few stasis-y attacks but they only lasted a few hours. I have to get my boyfriend to wrap him in a towel and I just syringed some on his lips so he licked it off. More ends up on us than inside him, but it always did the job!

(embarrassing story: one night I was having, ummm, some stomach issues myself. I didn’t want to run to the store, and after looking through the medicine cabinet and coming up short, I remembered Femto’s baby gas-x in the kitchen cupboard. Just so you know, it works on humans too lol)
