I have two indoor rabbits and while we usually dont have flies inside, one will get in from time to time. I am just concerned because one of my bunnies loves to sit/lay down in his litter box and because of this his feet are filthy. I try to scrub them the best I can but he is a very nervous rabbit and hates being held.  This also makes it difficult to inspect him for eggs or worms on him.

Should I be concerned about this and are there any tips you can give me as to how to keep him clean or avoid flystrike?

        Thanks

        Matt

Did you actually see anything in the litter or the rabbit? If not, I wouldn’t worry, you could always open a closet door and make room for his cage in there and leave the door open. or move him to a room with a door that’s ussaully closed, if you’re that worried. Just move him to a place with a low chance of getting a fly.

I saw a fly around the cage the other day so I cleaned it out, but we generally don’t get flies. I was just wondering if his dirty feet are a concern. Also, are there any physical signs of flystrike besides actually seeing the maggots or eggs? Any behaviors I will be able to notice?

My bunnies white, and her/his feet get pretty dirty. It’s natural for a bunny to spend time in their litterbox, I actually put a treats in there to keep them there (It helps litter training). I’ve heard other people say they use baby shampoo to bathe rabbits if you find it necessary, but it’s highly not recommended. I personally don’t know if there’s signs, but I don’t think so. You’ll see maggots in the litter (usually the first sign for people), but even then there’s a chance your rabbit isn’t infected. I had a scare with one of mine, and she was perfectly fine. No vet visits or anything. I’d say if you do see maggots in the litter then check her and if you see them coming FROM her, go to the vet. If not, clean the cage, and if they are there after you clean the cage, then they’d have to be coming from her.

Here’s a great article on flystrike. It talks about warning signs and prevention:

It’s not really something to be concerned about with indoor rabbits. Every house gets flies from time to time, but it takes more than that for bunnies to get fly strike. Also, are the feet covered with poo? Or just stained with pee? The pee is normal and nothing to worry about – some bunnies are like that. If it’s poo, I would give him a bum bath to clean him up.
