So in an effort to be economical, my husband wants to buy a bale of hay from his cousin to replace the more pricey kaytee Timothy hay I’ve been feeding the bun. Are there any types of hay I need to avoid? Bun is one year old. He currently eats unlimited hay, a cup of greens in the morning and about 1/4 cup oxbow pellets in the morning. Im all about saving money on hay but want to make sure I won’t feed him something that will cause illness.

It needs to be good quality hay, … all hay is not created equal! Usually hay that will be fed to dairy cows or riding/racing horses is good quality and healthy.

I’m not a hundred percent sure about this but I’d think its more a question of making sure you have the right things in it. A mix that includes timothy is a good idea, … the person you buy it from should be able to give you an idea of what is in it.

An adult rabbit like yours of coarse needs to stay away from alfalfa hay since it makes adult rabbits fat. Just find out what type of hay it is. Timothy is the best for adult rabbits. But other types such as orchard or oat grass hay are also good. Also make sure the quality is good, such as it being nice and green and not too pokey. It’s also not good if their are too many twigs in the hay.
