I got my little man neutered yesterday. The vet said he did very well, which was a relief. When we got home, he was moody and not so happy about what transpired. (he does not like vets or being handled) So i gave him fresh hay, leafy greens, and pellets. He was slow to eat at first but noticed he ate his greens overnight. Also checked his litterbox and he has been going to the bathroom. Today, i noticed that he hasnt really touched his pellets. Is this normal? Ive done so much research I feel like my brain is fried! He hasnt stopped eating the greens, just has been taking it slow. And hes eaten some carrot, and a slice of banana.

Has he been eating hay? If he has then I doubt you have much to worry about. Is he very fond of the pellets? If they aren’t as good as a treat to him then I wouldn’t worry too much. Being sluggish or a picky eater isn’t too uncommon after surgery. Give him another day or so to come round.

Well I’m no expert (glad you spoke with the vet) but from observation of other animals, people, and a hefty dose of personal experience I can say with complete certainty the stomach is usually upset for a while after an operation. Sounds as though he is choosing the foods he needs most. The greens will help keep him hydrated (you might leave them a little wetter then usual) and the big point is he is eating and interested in food, … really wouldn’t worry about it for a day or two. Since he is making the effort he is probably the best judge of what his body needs just now.

Hope he’s back to normal very soon!

I understand, I’m a first class worrier myself! I remember bringing my first pet home after being neutered, … it wasn’t fun! I’ve been calmer but none of the others since have been easy either. I’ve never had to care for a rabbit post op but looking after any animal at that time is (I find) very hard. Its when I am especially cross that they can’t simply talk to me and tell me what they are feeling, it would simplify so much!

Really happy he’s eating pellets again, … yes I’m sure you’ll have your naughty rabbit back in no time.

It sounds like he’s in track to a good recovery. : )

My rabbits snub pellets when they’re not feeling the best but will sample other foods. i find pellets are the last thing they return to wanting after surgery, even though they go mad for them usually.

hes fine back to his usual self! it just took him longer to start eating the pellets. it seemed he favored the greens more which took me for surprise! thank you for all that replied and responded
