I am relocating soon and plan on taking my rabbit, Socks, with me in cabin. He is use to traveling so that’s not the problem, however, before I move I want to get him neutered. Is it okay for him to get neutered and then fly about two weeks later.. Really a last minute thing and I need answers fast, thanks!

Hi, the one to give you the best answer is the vet who is doing the procedure. Mine is just a guess. But here goes: I would say yes, with the vet’s confirmation of this needed. A neuter of a male is not as difficult as a spay of a female, and usually goes well and heals a bit faster. Your average neuter requires the first few days of close attention (watching for redness, swelling, or other signs of infection or illness). You need to keep your bunny from jumping up, so keep him on one level to assure healing without complications. He won’t lose his hormones internally for about a month, so he cannot be near an un-spayed doe during that time. However, other than getting a little aggressive during that month, he should be completely healed if all goes well within a week. Depends also on what kind of stitches are used, dissolving or those that need removing. Again, that’s a follow up with your vet. If he does get infected or something goes wrong, then you’re dealing with an unhealthy bunny and that might make it a high risk.

As far as being in an airplane, I don’t know if it effects his health that soon after a favorable neuter or not. Again, call the vet asap to ask.

RabbitPam has given good advice. Please let us know what your vet says. it will be educational for all of us. By the way, how long is the flight?

The flight is from New Jersey to Florida and is a little over two hours.. However my bunny travels in the car with me daily and goes on longer car rides so hopefully when the vet reopens Monday it will be okay!

Are you taking advantage of the low cost rabbit neuters available in New Jersey? If so, I don’t blame you for wanting to do that prior to moving!

I can’t imagine two weeks out would be an issue, but I agree, sounds like a question for your vet! Maybe you can move the neuter up a week to give more of a cushion?

Yes! The njhrs program is great, I’m waiting for the certificate to arrive is the problem. Right after it arrives he’s going in the next day. Hopefully it arrives this week which would give us a better window between getting fixed and the move

Hi everyone, I forgot to post what the vet told me. They actually moved the neuter closer to the move and said that even a week is long enough for him to heal before we move, I’m bringing him in again a day or two before the actual move to check everything is good!
