So Caleb has had a little bit of a poopy butt lately, I’ve been really busy lately so I haven’t been noticing. So today I investigated a little more and noticed that his anal gland was kind of dirty and gross (I really hadn’t checked before). I don’t know how to clean it and this was my first time so what I did was take a q-tip and put some water on it and just kind of cleaned it by gently rubbing away the dirt…..was this the correct way to do it? I also cut a little bit of his fur around this area (I was VERY careful so not to cut any of his actual well stuff off (skin, genitals, ect). Lets just say he’s all clean down there now, it wasn’t really all that bad before but I just wanted to stop it before it got worse

Have you introduced any new veggies recently? Sometimes that can cause a bit of poopy butt. Or is it just over-produced cecotropes?

It sounds like you did a good job with the gland cleaning. Q-tips and water is what I’ve always seen recommended

Not really we gave him a pepper slice once and a piece of spinish but he was a little poopy before that, I’m thinking it was just over-produced cecotropes. It wasn’t that bad but it was noticeable and I didn’t want it to get worse. It was GROSS smelling that’s for sure lol I mean I expected it to smell bad being an anal gland and all but it smelled like freshly layed out in a field cow crap and I know what that smells like (live in a rural place). He seems happier now that he doesn’t have a poopy butt anymore

That stuff sure is gag-inducing. Funny how something so cute can make such an awful smell.

For anyone wanting to know how to clean anal glands, there is info in the BB “Bunny Info-Monthly Maintenance” Section, along with a funny drawing showing you where the anal glands are located.
