So Bindi’s had a mildly runny eye for a while. We did Xrays a few months ago that didn’t show anything wrong with his teeth. He was treated for a sinus inflammation. Since then his eye has been still mildly running off and on. The last few days, it has been running pretty bad and I noticed now it has a bad smell. Any idea what would cause this? I really don’t need any more pet health problems right now.

Going to call the vet tomorrow.

Isn’t a bad smell a sign of infection?

except for the bad smell, I would wonder if it could be an allergy to something?

Oh no, not again, poor Bindi!
I’m glad you have an appointment for him LPT, but I hear you on the grief it must be causing. I really hope it’s something that can be easily sorted.
In the meantime, are you able to keep it clean much? Mimzy often has crusty eyes that run from time to time, but nothing smelly and it’s always really hard to get the crusting stuff off. What color is the discharge? Is it just the goo that smells or does his eye smell as well? Any problems with the sight in the eye or any film on the lens? Maybe he scratched it or poked it with some hay?

I’m quite certain the eye is not infected. It’s clear and bright. I think it’s more of a tear duct drainage. I washed his eye area really well last night, don’t notice the smell this morning. Going to make an appointment anyways, just to be safe. I’m worried it has something to do with his teeth.

It’s just the discharge that smells and it’s clear. It’s not really an infection-type of smell, I don’t know, just has an odor and that’s new.

Expect an e-mail from me soon, Mimzmum, we need to catch up.

Was it more of a smell like when something is constantly wet? I’m trying to envision what you are smelling. LOL

I suppose the only way to put your mind at ease is to return to the vet. Perhaps something is irritating the tear duct or it is allergies?

                    Vet appointment on Wednesday.

It’s been super hot here, maybe that is affecting the smell on the eye discharge? Not sure. When I clean it, it doesn’t smell right away afterwards. Weird. Anyways, will let you know how it goes.

If his eye hasn’t been draining properly he might have developed an infection in the duct (Dacrocystitis). Its pretty common in dwarf breeds with their face shape. They can get a bit of smelly discharge with this.
Is there any swelling in front of the eye near the corner?
You can actually clear gunk out by pressing there with your finger.

Another thought is if he’s had wet fur under the eye maybe the smell is from his skin there?

                      Good luck this week!

We had to change the appointment to Friday morning, so he will be going in tomorrow. It hasn’t had that smell for a couple of days. Very strange. Will let you know after he gets back.

So, the vet listened to his lungs and said there is a slight rattle that she suspects is a remnant from the sinusitis we treated. She put him on Baytril oral for another 14 days. I hate treating for something that I don’t really see, you know? Last time he was on the oral baytril, the runny eye stopped so this may well do the trick this time. Does anyone know anything about sinusitis in rabbits? What causes it, etc? I was so tired and like a zombie at the appt. and didn’t think to ask certain questions. I’m going to e-mail her. She also gave me an ointment for his eye.

Just hate meds. Now more than ever. My horse was on steroids for several weeks after developing a respiratory problem due to allergies. She then came down with laminitis (a very serious, and sometimes fatal inflammation in the hooves) which we suspect was brought on by the steroids. What a stressful couple of weeks. I think she’s past the worst of it now, but I’m calling her “The new Bindi”.. Treatment for something causes something else. Sigh….

Good to hear Winnie is coming good. You’ve been dealing with that a while havent you?

Since Bindi needs molar trims now, I’m betting his teeth have a bit to do with the sinusitis. I think these dental problems just come with aging in domestic breeds unfortunately.

Did you say he had some thickening of the bone due to inflammation in the sinus area or am I confusing him with Mimzy?

Yes, Jersey, that is what the X-rays showed.

He has to go back in for a re-check in 14 days. I’m going to insist she check his teeth. She can usually get a pretty good look with the scope.

It’s been about a month since Winnie has been having issues. Not fun at all. I miss riding my girl. Rode another horse yesterday and it was like riding a huge tank that didn’t want to move, lol, not as fun as my horse.

Ah silly me! If vet could see that in xray, she’d be able see anything with molar roots then, I guess.
Depending on what view was taken though.

Yes, Mimzy has a deformity in his sinuses too. But I think he has more trouble with actual ‘hay fever’ right now than anything else.
LPT, how sedentary is Bindi now? I’m thinking you’d want to keep him moving so that something like this doesn’t progress to pneumonia.
And of course, Pen-G injections are always stronger than Baytril, but neither you nor I enjoy giving shots. If only there was a good abx that was oral, tasty and effective for deep infection I would think we’d see more resolution of these conditions. Bunnies are just a breeding ground for nasty bacteria inside their little bodies.
I’m glad to hear Winnie is doing better but yeah…gosh they know how to stress us out! 0_0

She also gave me some ointment for his eyes. Not really sure why. It says “PolymyxinB/Bacitracin/Neomycin”. I’m supposed to put it in his eyes 2x day. I haven’t done it yet. Any idea what this is for? It’s bunny safe, right? I trust my vet, I’m just really paranoid.

My kamdyns eye is doing the same thing we are treating it for allergies and it seems some better. Maybe it could be allergies.

                                            I found this chart:
                                            http://www.lagomorphs.com/Drugsbyclass.pdf

Revised in 2004… But I’m not sure how accurate it is.

Is this the ointment? If it is there’s some info on it’s uses:

                                            http://www.medi-vet.com/prod-Neomyc…-2389.aspx

Another study I read said it shouldn’t cause any harm if accidently ingested. If you’re worried about him getting some in his system from grooming, etc… A lot of drugs are tested on rabbits/animals so some toxicity info can be found that way sometimes :/

                                            Vibes for Bindi!

Mimz- Well Bindi is a lop so he’s pretty sedentary. I didn’t even think of the possibility of pneumonia. Will have to mention that to my vet and see what she says.

The ointment is Neosporin. Similar to the triple antibiotic you were using for his ears.
Not sure why your vet didn’t give the eye/ear neosporin preparation.
Maybe the bacitracin in this one targets more types of bugs?

ETA: I guess it’s a way to continue with abx without upsetting his stomach.

LPT, I was just reading about overgrowth of the roots of upper front teeth. I had never considered what problems they could present. Only molar root overgrowth.

So now I’ve learnt the incisor roots can cause blockage of the ducts also.
Do you remember seeing those in the X-ray?

I’ve used ointment like that in Mimzy’s eyes before. It actually works really well if you can get it in there. It is a bit tricky as far as administering it goes. I always feel terrible about holding Mimzy’s eyes open as his lids don’t really snap back the way they used to.

I would think the abx would take care of the infection to a point you won’t have to be concerned about pneumonia, but it never hurts to ask. I hope Bindi will be okay. Keeping you both in my pryaers always. xxxx

                                                          Thanks, Mimz.

He does have some bacteria in the left ear. She gave me some new ear ointment to put in for 7 days. Something he’s never had, I believe, she said it was discontinued but they are making it again now. Will get the name for you later.

As for his eyes, she said since they are not running much, just use the eye ointment as needed and see if that helps.
