Today I had my bunny out playing with her then I thought “Wow, here furr is so glossy and beautiful”, very healthy looking. Then sense she was out I went to clean her cage and in the trays tons of maggots/worms. I’m horrified, what do I do? & also, I have to rabbits (they both have seperate cages) should I not let her near the other? Will she be okay?

Also, she’s hopping around now, and it doesn’t look like there’s any in the litter box thats outside of the cage that shes currently using?

            Is she indoors?

My advice is to have a fecal test from the vet so they vet can prescribe the proper medication to get rid of the worms.

Yes, she is an indoor rabbit. I currently just redid a bedroom for them, and I let my first bunny play (He’s litter trained) & no worms. Then when he was put away I let her out for a few hours, (She’s not litter trained) & no worms, I know it’s her sense its all over my floor lololol. I just cleaned her cage. I think I’m going to watch for a few days, I’m starting to wonder if it just was her trays and not her. Perfectly fat glossy furred rabbit. Thanks, in a few days if I see them again that’s what I’ll do!

I ditto the fecal test. Until then, just keep her cage and litter tray super clean.

If that tray hadn’t been cleaned in a while, it’s possible that a fly got in your house and laid eggs in the droppings. It doesn’t take long for the eggs to hatch and for maggots to appear. I’ve seen that happen with rabbits that are housed outside, when the droppings are allowed to pile up. It would be more unusual for this to happen to an indoor rabbit, but flies can get inside houses.

Not to be an alarmist here, but be sure to check her bottom asap to make she herself doesn’t have/get flystrike. (where maggots infest the rabbits hind area.) This can be deadly to rabbits. This can happen to healthy indoor rabbits too. Since you found maggots in her tray, then you want to make double sure they are not on her either.

I’m glad that BB posted about the danger of flystrike. I should have mentioned that. It is very dangerous. If she has gotten infested with maggots, they need to be removed immediately and she needs to take an antibiotic.

Well, guys, I did panic over that. But my Dad told me to clean the cage, and we’d check it the next day. It’s been a week, and zero signs of them! I ussaully take very good care of her cage and her of course, but I guess I got so preoccupied with fixing a room for my rabbits, I just waited a day too long. Poor Rabbit /: NEVER AGAIN. But on a brighter note! My bunnies are healthy and VERY VERY happy in their new room
