So I had recently FINALLY figured out a good “safe house” or “hidey house” for my buns to hide in for safety when they felt they needed to be protected.  I was using a square shaped box made out of NIC cubes, covered by cardboard… but last night Sidney (one of my girls) managed to jump the x pen (AGAIN) and I’m concerned she has been using this to help her make her great escapes.  We just upgraded to the 48″ x pens also but I really don’t want to put the NIC cube safe house in there with the possibility of her using that to jump out!

I can’t use anything plastic as my buns are VERY big chewers.  And would definitely chew and eat the plastic.

I also need something somewhat lower down so she isn’t using it to jump up.   I had thought about using the NIC cube and just making a traingle out of the top with the NIC cube parts so it made like a sloped house type thing but my boyfriend had a good point – she used to constantly jump on her cage when she was little that was shaped the same way so she could definitely still use this to her advantage.

        Any ideas?

Editing in an add-in:  I have tried the typical cardboard boxes (many thicker ones also) and the Tans have them all destroyed in a day or two so those aren’t working out etiher!

I was going to suggest a cardboard box but it seems like that isn’t the best option. I used a pantry storage stackable thing similar to this one

How about making something out of thick wood? That way if they chewed it, it would take a long time. What you could do to prevent Sidney jumping out is where you have the hidey house positioned, have nic grids attached above it, so she can’t jump out.

I used to take my extra Xpen, and create interesting shapes out of them in the living room – sometimes V, sometimes W etc… and even though their heads were not covered, the boys loved to sit with their backs in a corner – where they could look out, but no one could approach them from the back. I had also bought a little pet tent for the boys to hide – but after the initial curiosity wore off, they didn’t really spend much time in there – but who knows – maybe your boys would like it. http://www.amazon.com/Hagen-Living-World-Tent-Pets/dp/B006JVPUUY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1372794149&sr=8-1&keywords=pet+tent

I thought a picture would help  -  I also did this with NIC cubes, till we built their condo.

I would try something out of wood but I’m not very handy at all…. now if I could find something (similar to what they have at PetSmart and Petco) I would definitely get it. They have wooden houses for small animals to hide in… but they are way too small for my buns I think! Especially for all 5 of them.

I worry about the storage stackable because it’s plastic and they chew.. on everything!

That makes sense, Bax… but I was looking for something that had sides so they could get away COMPLETELY. I could try and cover it with a towel or sheet but Nora eats them all….

It’s so hard to find something okay for all of them! Urgh.

I use a cat cube, Fiona loves jumping in and out of it and she also sometime plays with it. It’s Ike $4 at Walmart and is made of some weird, cheap fabric. Here’s a pic of her inside of one.

Once again, if my picture is too big, I’m sorry. I use an ipad for posting so idk how to edit the size down and to me, it never looks like a different size than anyone else’s.

I’m wondering if you could use the X-Pen covers to prevent your little Houdini from escaping?

                      http://www.amazon.com/GoGo-Pet-Products-Exercise-Cover/dp/B001D19XN0/ref=sr_1_2?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1372973169&sr=1-2&keywords=pen+cover

You might be able to make something cheaper and more in tune with your decor. Monty loves to escape and he does it by climbing out over the sides. The only thing that’s ever kept him in are visual deterrents (laying a blanket/sheet over the pens) or the lid my husband made when he was in a single pen.
