My bun in a 1 and 1/2 year old neutered male. I adopted him from HRS in April. Everything had been great; he would play, investigate, Binky and eat a lot. However, in the past week he has seemed to lose interest in playing; he hides under the bed all day and all night long and won’t eat! He eats very little now, and rarely plays anymore. He did poop, pee and eat last night, but nothing since. I’m wondering if he is sad, depressed, or sick. I love my baby so much and spend a lot of time with him. I don’t understand the change in the behavior and I’m so worried! Any suggestions?

If your rabbit’s eating habits have drastically changed, and it’s at the point where he is barely eating, he needs to be seen by a vet right away. He might be going into GI stasis, he may have teeth problems or he may be developing some other illness. The sooner he is soon, the better. Rabbits can go into a decline quickly and will need treatment ASAP, before it becomes too late.

Oh no. It sounds like he may be ill. Change in behavior is a very strong indicator that something could be wrong in the health department.

I would have him seen by an experienced rabbit savvy vet as soon as possible!

There’s always the possibility of gas or stasis if he’s eating but very minimally and isn’t as active. Have you tried simethicone (infant gas drops)? Sometimes if you give them a dose of this and get them moving – it will sometimes help get their stomachs moving around and help with gas if that’s what’s wrong.

I strongly agree with Tobyluv and Tanlover, an immediate visit to the vet is in order… It could be caused by so many different things and needs to be looked at.
Take a poop sample with you so that can be checked out also.

Going to have to echo the others. I would get him into the vet as soon as you can. Change in eating habits is often a medical concern.

Good news, guys, last night late ( like in the middle of the night) he ate two big plates of salad, made huge poopies, and kept me up all night jumping and running around. This morning he ate his breakfast real good. I wonder if the excess heat and humidity (here in Delaware) got to him a little this week? Well, I’ll still keep an eye on him but he seems better right now. I think it’s cause I threatened him with going to the doctor! Thanks for the support! I’m a new bunny mommy and I worry about him constantly. He is very spoiled and babied!

He very much have had a small bout of stasis that he managed to come out of without help… or even very bad gas. I would continue to keep an eye on him and take him to the vet straight away if you see ANYTHING abnormal.

I’m so glad to hear he is doing better though!

Thanks, Tanlover! I still do wonder if he ever is lonely for a girlfriend, even though he’s never alone. I had a sitter watch him for a week when I went on vacation. They had a bunny, too, and Reno enjoyed playing with her. I think he would like to have a playmate at home. I thought he was sad cause he missed playing with the other bun!

Second buns are amazing as long as you can afford them and have the time for them. Make sure you have both if you are thinking about it.

And that you’re up for the bonding process!

Sounds like he had a minor case of gas or something. One of my buns went into stasis this year right when it started to get really hot and humid (despite having AC in the house). I think the sudden weather changes can stress their systems a little.
