Have noticed these dry patches in one of my bun’s ears this week. I think she might just have scratched herself whilst grooming but just wanted to check there’s nothing I need to check out here. Any advice?

It’s hard to tell what’s dry and what is her natural change of color. If you want to watch it at home for the weekend to see if it gets better or worse, you could try this. Take a q-tip or very tiny bit of tissue, moisten with mineral oil (don’t let it get drippy) and gently smooth it on the dry area. The idea is to NOT get any oil into their ear passage, but to apply a small bit to the skin. Just try that once, let it alone, and see if it is any better then next day.

Watch for head shaking, however. If there is head shaking of the ears, with our without your applying a bit of oil, it could be an indication of a more serious problem than dryness. Persistant ear flapping/head shaking should be seen by a vet, and I’d make an appointment for Monday.

Thank you so much for responding. She doesn’t seem bothered by it in the slightest and there’s no hed shaking so I will keep an eye on it for another 24 hours and see if it goes down. Not sure what Mineral oil is. Is it the stuff you use to treat chopping boards? Sorry to be dense.

Mineral oil is just that “mineral”, … not fruit or nut oil. Its sold as mineral oil (in the drugstore/chemist’s is a good place to check), for a variety of uses, internal and external. When you want an oil that will coat or form a seal its the best since it doesn’t absorb the way a vegetable based oil will. Its also very inexpensive , and should be easy to find, honestly.

I’ll go to the pharmacy tomorrow and see if they have it. Thanks. The ears look better today. Just three tiny scabs. I do think she’s just scratched herself. Her nails were pretty sharp until I clipped them for the first time last week. That was a whole other learning curve! She has black nails so it’s totally impossible. Only managed tiny tiny bits of the end and nothing on the front paws as she freaked out. This bunny keeping is hard work! Love her though. x
