To keep things short, I think on the 26th? My rabbit started acting strange out of NO where VERY abruptly. He was acting quite normal (even hopped on my bed a couple times which he knows he isn’t supposed to get on, so he always runs to the corner and tries to avoid me picking him up) the normal mischevious hyper rabbit as always. My mom came in to give my rabbits (I have 2) veggies and he was acting quite strange, not very excited, was eating extremely slowly, and seemed lethargic. All day after that he’s been acting extremely lethargic, and was NOT interested in food, BUT he ate – not like him at all. Just the scent of food makes him go crazy!
I gave him some simethicone (3 doses – 1CC every hour) and another when I woke up the next day. Now, he seems better. But not really his usual self. I am making sure he is eating PLENTY of greens, and I have given him a willow branch with leaves (its all dried) because there is a willow tree in my neighborhood which I have picked from before multiple times. I believe he is experiencing the beginning stage of GI stasis.
His symptoms:
Lethargic
Not excited about food – but does eat, but he eats extremely slowly which again is not like his usual self
Sits by himself hunched up in an uncomfortable stiff position, or lays on the ground with tummy on the ground but his feet are not flopped out -he does this 98.9% of the time.
Poop is small (I will attach a pic)
Stomach is not “dough-y” like my normal rabbit’s stomach is. It’s just very “watery” and “empty” but I can feel the organs but it’s not “full” like my other rabbit’s
Haven’t really seen him drinking water, but I’m sure he has been but probably not as much which is why I haven’t seen him
Doesn’t really get excited when I get up or come in the room and he is the type of rabbit that jumps off and on the second level, viciously bites the bars of the cage, runs from one end to the other until I let him out or give him some form of attention. Instead he barely really even moves his ears, let alone get up physically.
Does this sound like GI stasis? The good news: NOW, he is a bit more hyper but still very lethargic and prefers to be left alone while sitting in one of those 2 positions^. I have given him so far: Veggies, a small piece of pineapple (a few hours ago), simethicone, hay, and water and pellets (although I am going to stop giving him pellets for the time being) I am out of the usual hay and it won’t come in till tuesday so I have been giving my rabbits bermuda grass hay which they don’t like but have been eating but not a whole lot, so I’m just going to go to the store tomorrow and get a small bag of hay until tuesday.
Should I call the vet? I am worried about his health, BUT he is improving. I don’t know if he actually IS improving or if he’s just getting better at faking his “wellness” or what? He is still VERY off, but there has been improvement since a couple days ago.
here you can see his poop vs regular sized poop, which I heard is a symptom in gi stasis. Does this sound like it could be anything else other than GI stasis?
