I was doing a water change today on my aquarium and suctioning out the gravel. And the water goes into a bucket. I usually fill two buckets so I had one that was already full and I put it to the side while I was filling the other one. Well when I was done gravel vaccuuming I looked down to see Harley drinking the water in the bucket! The water had A LOT of fish poop in it :/ Will this make him sick? Should I be concerned about any bacteria that could be harmful to him from ingested fish poop? It’s fresh water and none of my fish have any diseases that I know about. I don’t have any chemicals added to the water except this “Prime” That I add to new water before adding it to the aquarium to condition it and make it safe for the fish.

I’m not sure how much he drank or how long he was there but he was guzzling it up like kool aid!

Yummy! I think he’ll probably be fine. It is one of those scenarios where you just watch and wait. I’m sure bunnies have drank worse stuff.

Ok, and if something were to happen it would be within the next day or two? I’m worried that he catches some kind of weird bacteria or parasite and it takes a week or two to make an appearance and I won’t be around to help him. He’s going to the bunsitters house in 5 days and then I won’t see him until July 24th!

If he did ingest something bad would I know about it before leaving?

I think you would see any ill effects within 48 hrs…. There is no bacteria carried by live fish that could do any harm that I am aware of.

Yeah, I don’t know of anything. I would think that if something was going to surface, it would be sooner rather than later.

Phew ok that’s good. I think I’m just being overly sensitive right now. I want them to be in tip top health to prep them for the stresses of being at a baby sitters for 3 weeks. I’m so stressed leaving them for nearly a whole month and being thousands of miles away.

Thanks for the reassurance. I just feel like bunnies are so delicate lol

If in doubt a vet is only a call away. But, honestly buns in the wild drink fishy water (pond, river etc) .. so I would bet their systems can handle it. Just keep an eye on him the next couple days.

Harley didnt eat his salad this morning but he is willing to take a treat from me. Going to give him some simethicone as a precaution. I don’t think it is the aquarium water. I can’t see it causing gas

Could cause stomach upset, which if he is in pain he wouldn’t want to eat much. It isn’t always gas. Hope he starts to eat for you.

Ate his evening salad and being back to his rambunctious self. This morning I was concerned because he didnt eat and he wouldn’t do his normal thing of running from one end off the house to the other while doing binkies. He just stayed loafed up in the corner of the living room.

He’s back to being normal again.
