I got my bunnies some balsa wood to chew on and they enjoy it. I’ve been experimenting with flavoring them and it was a HUGE hit. So far I haven’t had any mold issues (I’ve done carrot, banana, and blueberry), I have testers that have been sitting around for a few weeks without molding but it’s a concern of mine.

Any ideas on reducing the risk of mold or should I just put a time limit on them and take them away pre-emptively?  I’m not having the issue right now but if there’s a way to minimize the risk of it growing safely it would put my mind at ease.

I would imagine if they are dry they won’t mold – I mean even so when a rabbit chews on it there would be some moisture issues with that since they have saliva but they would dry quickly. I’m not aware of anything you can do to treat wood to stop mold other than keeping it dry.

I guess mold could be a concern if you live in an area with high humidity but then it would be an issue with most items you own.

Thanks Sarita! I might be over-worrying about mold. I kept thinking because I’m using fruit to flavor and fruit molds it might be an issue.

What do you use to flavor the wood?
