My bun is very picky when it comes to hay. I’ve tried a million different kinds (okay, maybe 4 or 5), and he wasn’t eating enough of any of them, even 2nd cut. So I ordered 3rd cut timothy from KMS Hayloft, and he loves it! Eats it all day.

But since he’s been on that (3 days), his poo has gotten smaller. It’s still hard and golden colored, but it’s smaller than it was. I know 3rd cut has less fiber than 1st and 2nd cut, so I’m wondering if that’s what’s causing it… does anyone know if that could be it?

I’m glad he’s eating hay, but I’m worried about this.

Well it is less fiber but since he is eating it, it is better than nothing – my rabbits love the 3rd cut as well. I wouldn’t worry as long as he is eating it – if he wasn’t eating the other cuts then he wasn’t getting any fiber that way.

Have you tried mixing the 3rd cut with some other kind of hay? Or does he just eat around it?

I agree with Sarita. If he wasn’t eating the other types it wasn’t do him any good and at least with 3rd cut he’s eating hay.

The 3rd cut hay should be given as a treat. It has less fiber and is really sweet compared to other hays. I would give your bun a fistful of the 3rd cut a day. On top of giving him coarse hay. I found that the Bluegrass hay that KMS sells is great. Oat hay from Sierra Valley Hay is, also, great. I know that it is pricy but what I do is buy Oat Hay from Sierra Valley and then Bluegrass hay from KMS and I have a massive box of the 3rd cut that has lasted me a while now (even with three buns).

I use the 3rd cut as a regular hay, not a treat but mixing it would be a good idea too.

Thanks everyone! I started mixing it with 2nd cut timothy and so far he’s still eating it. I’ll see how his poo is tomorrow (such a strange thing to say  .)
